View Full Version : Challenge: I Hour Photo (Manip)

Rather than adding to the pile of theme days, (of which I've added plenty to the list,) I'd like to extent a general challenge to the artists of the C2F DCG:

Do a drawing, photomanip, digital rendering, or whatever art form you favor, in SIXTY MINUTES. Don't spend more than one hour on the picture. You can spend as much time thinking about how to go about it as you want, of course, but as soon as you start gathering base images, or putting your pencil to paper, you have an hour.

The best part about this is, anyone with a spare hour can do this! Second best part being that no one's expecting any masterpieces, so the pressure's off.

Just put "Challenge: 1 Hour <Subject>" for the piece's title, so as to identify it. And don't bother with astericks sinse this isn't a theme day.

Who's up for this?

okay that was a little over an hour but yeah sure why not, if it'll only take an hour, that's no biggie at all.

Cool idea. I'll try to do one of these, though to date nothing I've finished has taken less than about ten hours... so it'll indeed be a challenge. I probably can't do it for a couple weeks though, cause I'm currently working on the collaboration with Heromorph and then in a couple days, I will, to quote Zac, be gone for two weeks.

Thanks for the interest, but I think I'll have to pass too. I don't know if it's in me to create something so quickly...let's not forgot my last pic took a year, lol. It might be fun to see what I could do in one hour, but I think I'd innevitably break the rules and end up working on it for a week. In previous art classes when I was supposed to do quick 5 minute figure sketches I'd end up bringing them home and completing them later....

It's cool to see what other artists can do in an hour, though. It's interesting to see the results when the creative process is condensed.

ps- Essex, though I completely respect your dedication, you could always submit the hour work, then submit the week/month/year/decade/generation spanning work later.
But of course, it's your choice entirely.

My Gosh,
That was kind of stressful. I just did mine. I Grabbed the first base picture I saw and went to town. I took exactly 1 hour from start to finish. Started at 6:20 and finished at 7:20. I am kind of surprised at how it turned out. Submitted it just Now. Should be up in a few updates.

Well the junk I did for this challenge was rejected. I thought the electrical tape strategically placed was enough of a covering, but alas it wasn't. I'll have to go back to the drawing board.

Zac

I haven't really said anything about this, but finally it's kinda getting to me. I don't see the point in this challenge. If anything, I think it's a waste of the free space we're given for the DCG.

No great artwork in history only took an hour to create. In fact, I remember a time long ago when any picture that was admittingly less than an hour of work was rejected. When I view the DCG, I do it because I want to see the best art people have to offer, not stuff they only spent an hour on.

I'm not going to crack down and demand this be stopped, since it's already started, but I will ask that people try and preserve the quality of the DCG and not submit "art" that took them less than an hour to do.

StrangeFish
08-02-2004, 05:16 PM
Hmmm, I used this as a launching board... Doing a 1 hour "sketch" of the manip was really helpful... I fully intend to redo my submission, spending time on it, to see what a polished version would look like.

*thought that was the point of this exercise* http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

Well, mine may have stunk, but what about MysticMorgan? It made front page, for pete's sake. And I saw one for the 1 Hour Challenge that someone sent into heromorph, and that one looks pretty good too.

The point of the thing is basically to see how our art forms itself. Yes, it's a bit self amusing and insider- specified, but so far it hasn't yeilded anything below the regular gallery standard.

I DID anticipate this feeling from either Essex, Welshcat, or you, but I figured this excersize would be fun and interesting.
As it is, I'll likely delete my Mandarin piece after all the 1 Hours have been displayed, anyway.

Wow! I didn't think it was that bad. I apologize for my offense. I further apologize to all who contributed to the challege. I am forty years old and I truly never gave a second thought to the level of exposure remaining from the base picture. I will on second thought not contribute another piece for this challenge.

now see that's just absurd. spend an hour on a manip that your only going to delete later. i understand the idea behind this, it proves a manip doesn't have to be a labor intensive process, i myself have done a hour or less manip...but i looks back on it as a mistake. not that "mistake" is a bad thing....i think of it this way. more than just the members of this forum peruse the gallery.....more than just us hit this site daily. why show off something that took you one hour when you can spend a few more hours and have it done right. would you rather show off your stick figures or your masterpieces to the masses?

p.s.
i do like the fact that this has caused some active participation in the DCG...that is always a positive.

trust me, your manip is done when you say it's done...if it took you an hour and you say it's done...it's done. if it took you 4 months and you say it's done...it's done. we all have different speeds, different ideas, different everything...we are individuals.

Y'know, I wanted to do one of these, but even with two weeks to think on it (intermittently), I couldn't think of a pic I could do a good job with in an hour... whenever I came close, I started thinking about little additions or effects I'd want to do for the pic... which'd bring it into the range of Kev's 100 hour challenge. If I think of something good, I'll go for it, but I'm starting to think I'm incapable of doing something in an hour that I'd be particularly satisfied with...
