Heh, heh! This should be good. That last, and I DO MEAN the LAST of the Catastrophe Series "wonders"!

The White King by NickIce
Pretty good, if this is like a first try type deal. I like it.

Gokuastrophe RMX by Level1
Clear, concise, not my original drawing. I only touched up the hair and the curled fist, partly for factors of pixelation bleeding. Background, everyone knows it by now, and possibly are saying that its played to death....

Evolution Rogue And Gambit by MaidenRaine1300
Looks like you hurried on this one, MR1300. Whoa! I'm not "feeling" this image manip!

Forge In Solitary by NightScroller
This is nicely done, only thing is that what seems to be his leg or knee, is difficult to differentiate of what that object is. Overall, a nicely done manip, and quite the idea I'd have in mind if I presented the site with an image of Forge.

Eternal Sailor Scouts - Sailor Jupiter by MilleniumBum
Nicely done. Beautiful overtones, coloration (the green is superb). A little bit of halo affect around the hair area, but done quite well, otherwise.

Emma Frost by ShadowHusk
Beautiful model used. Some smudge affects, or at least what appears to be smudge, and overall, a nice touch.

Batman Begins Movie Poster by mikedibella
This is nice! Looks like a movie peice!

Starfire by mahsess
I suggest reworking around the eyes, other than that...cool!

Infinity The Second Time Around by bearbot
Makes me giggle when I see this, of how well it is done. Gives me that tickle feeling!

Supergirl In Flight by Powermaster Jazz
I like this. And it is superbly altered. Good Job!

Tomb Raider by Ed Hopkins
This is cool! If you could teach me how you did that, that'd be awesome...

Superman Movie Teaser Poster by gavin north
Average. Seems like a wallpaper or poster from my viewpoint. Nice.

Daveswellingsupermanflight by Temporal Dave
Nice manipulation. Not a bad composition.

The Hulk by NIMROD X
Good Job there NIMROD X! The Hulk looks really MEAN in this one...

The New Green Goblin by Spiderman620815
I like this, especially the way you sketched it, and what you sketched it on...

Power Girl by Nathauan13
Beautiful, there Nathaun13! Absolutely Beautiful!

Whew! That was allot! Nice uploads people!

The White King by Nickice
Another fine effort on your part… I like the power effect. There is a little problem with the alignment of facial features and the image clean up (as usual).

Gokuastrophe RMX by Level1
This one works better with the change to the cast of the shadow. Hooray the “Catastrophe” is over.

Evolution Rogue and Gambit by MaidenRaine1300
Nice base image… The execution is about as good as you could do in Paint.

Forge In Solitary by NightScroller
Great casting… as for the metal see the tutorials here.

Eternal Sailor Scouts - Sailor Jupiter by MilleniumBum
This one is good to compare Sailor Mercury to. With the exception of the face and skirt all of the blends are smooth. This picture looks more cohesive as a result. I am going to complain about the short cuts you are taking on the stars now though. You are at too high a skill level to take that easy way out.

Emma Frost by ShadowHusk
Good job on the skin where the bikini top was. The costuming on this version is better that the Black Cat version. Still a little simple but you are going in the right direction.

Batman Begins Movie Poster by mikedibella
This is very nice, simple poster image. I like it. One thing, I happened to view this image on two different monitors and found that some of the shadow and blocked outlines are actually darker that the background. Did anyone else get that?

Starfire by mahsess
This is a little pixelly and the eye color doesn’t conform to her eyes. Take a look at the tutorial here on skin clean-up.

Infinity the second time around by bearbot
A little bit of odd figure proportions happening but a nice clean image nonetheless.

Supergirl in Flight by Powermaster Jazz
Very nice work, this is a big step forward. The big problem for me on this one is she doesn’t look like she flying. I still have to give you huge “props” for the improvement over the rest of your work. Magnificent!

Tomb Raider by Ed Hopkins
Great work… The only thing I can say YOW… No really… Ok the right side of her shirt/suit has too high a highlight… Sorry I couldn’t help myself… It’s a sickness I think.

Superman Movie teaser poster by gavin north
Very nice minimalist poster… It works for me… and that’s a damn cool drop shadow on the text.

DavesWellingSupermanFlight by Temporal Dave
The clarity of the face compared to the rest of the image makes it pop off and look disconnected.

THE HULK by NIMROD X
I like the Hulk. That a neat take on the character. I really don’t like the bricks in the background. They really distract from the quality of the drawing.
The New Green Goblin by Spiderman620815
You have a really cool energetic style. I think that your technique gives this a hyper look that adds vibrancy to the piece. Your style reminds me a little of Rick Veitch

Power Girl by Nathauan13
Nice job… The legs are a little simplistic, and the buttons holding her cape should have been skewed for perspective, but overall those things detract little from the quality of the image. Good work.

i'm sorry, but the gambit and rogue piece seems like a joke. i don't mean to be rude, but it's an insult to those of us who work hard to do a good work to show the people here. again, sorry, but seriously, unless you're a very young kid, i don't think you should be too proud of this one. at least not proud enough to post it on a website for the world to see. nothing personal.

stillhbk- Gotta say, you're being a bit of a jerk here.
That person's Rouge/Gambit pic looks better than MY third pic. I had niether the proper programs or experience to do even a semi- decent piece, but I wanted to contribute something to the fandom. And I had ideas I wanted to put out there.
Not everyone goes on here as an art conosuire, and you have to understand that.

I have to agree with the Junkster. One of the things I like about this site is that you receive a critique not a judgement. Critiques are designed to help people improve while judgements of the kind you expressed only serve to discourage. I don't want to see that happen here.

MaidenRaine1300 please don't let this discourage you from posting again.

stillhbk, You must also be really new to this site...

I've been here for about 3 or 4 years now (i guess) and i've seen a lot... this site has been through a lot... a lot of controversie, some guys being baned and coming back again under another names (mini me...) some guys that only painted hair and submited like 30 pics at once...

If you think his work is a Joke you missed a lot...

Now, the joke part, i agreee with the comments made by the other guys. DCG is not only Essex, Zac, Android, Marcelo Gomes and David Jose MOran! DCG has a lot of works and artists... Some need to evolve, but they need time to improve their work.

If not I wouldn't be here, would have been baned right on the first manips, and would never achieve the style i got...

If you don't believe me, check Essex and Zac early works, you'll see what I mean.

When i got here, there were 3 tutorials in the tutorial list. Now there's plenty more tutorials, and if they're not enough there are a lot of links to tutorials, we give each other (Mike just gave me Worth1000.com to learn how to recolour)

Alltough i understand your frustation when you see manips or drawings poorly done, you must keep in prspectif that they need to improve and not get the kind of comments you just gave...

I believe you can even compare your own 3 first submissions (that i don't know if were your three frist manips...) with your last ones.

You know there was, kind of a theme day, that's still open, called "1st pic redo". I challenge you to redo your first submission to see how diferent the results will be.

Maybee 2 or 3 from now, you can challenge MaidenRaine1300 to redo is first manips.

dperceful
09-03-2004, 05:11 PM
first....i'll just get this out of the way.

the comments by stillhbk are a little harsh. i have seen many things in this gallery that are nothing more than a green tinted woman and someone calls it she hulk, blue tinted girl is mystique, a white skunk hair mark and it's rogue, slap an s logo on a guy and it's superman, etc. we have all seen stuff that there was no care at all taken in the process. however there are better ways of expressing your displeasure of an image...you can keep it to yourself, you can make suggestions on where to improve (you might think of lots of things, but start out small), etc. also we don't know if artist x is a 12 year old kid, or that he/she might only have access to paint, or if the person is handicap and painted it with a brush in his mouth...you get the idea.

and lastly....stillhbk your opinions are yours and they are valued here...but rather than potshot one artist...share the love to all of the others...try a complete or partial uir....you have no troubles requesting one when your pics are posted.

The White King: are you taking snapshots of your pics or scanning? the images seem a little dark for a scanner. i like the power signatures...it's a nice concept.

Gokuastrophe RMX: again...i think the CATASTROPHE Template 3D particles (i guess thats what your calling the 3d elements behind Goku) are just totally unnecessary, i think with these pieces...less is more. i think if you revisit this series maybe shattering the entire background behind that character would be a nice effect. by that i mean the entire background would appear as shattered glass behind the character.

Evolution Rogue and Gambit: i dont think this is as good as your dazzler piece..but it's a nice effort. next time in your art notes if you would add which app you are using i could offer some better advice. my main advice now would be watch your edges...make sure they are straight and clean. for example around gambits cheeks...the costume is rough...just fill it in and make it straight or slightly conformed to the face.

forge: your art notes explain the image not the process. i liked your colossus metal better than this effect.

jupiter: mmmmmm....laura prepon. are you creating these skirts from scratch...because if so....WOW. it not....i take it all back http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif . nice colors...the greens are nice and vibrant...they dont seem washed. the white on the arms...it just doesnt look right....dont know why....could be me though. all in all...it's nice work.

emma: isnt removing clothes tough? i wouldnt have known if it were not for your art notes...nice work on the clean up. i think the edges of the costume could be more crisp...but really this is good work. i like it, for what that is worth.

Batman Begins Movie Poster: minimal....but believable. the skin is too rich...that light isnt that strong and it appears to be a cold light...so maybe some desaturation would cure that.

Starfire: nice work on the hair. i think the image overall could use some cleanup....there are plenty of ways to do that...check out the Art School. with some cleanup and some more precision on the eyes i think you would have a piece of work that would surprise you.

Infinity the second time around: as always..nice work. great cover image. nice lighting and post costume work. the lighting is consistent...my only real nitpick is the shadows...they seem blobby. still...better than i can do...nice work.

Supergirl in Flight: bedsheets....i would have never thought of that...great idea. nic work on bringing in the hair...fits very well. a nice frankensteined piece....you brought the elements in and honestly, without the art notes i would have thought it was one model.

tomb raider: nice damn work! trust me taking the image into 3d and creating an image plane and getting that camera just right isn't the easiet thing to do. nice work on the costuming....the shorts are a work of art all in themselves. the wrinkles....just gorgeous. perfect background, nice model (great work on the hair), very well done.

Superman Movie teaser poster: simple and a perfect. for a minute i wasnt sold on the red text on the red background...but the way you have the shadow...it poses no problem. nice work.

DavesWellingSupermanFlight: nice work ont he spitcurl. fits the body fine.

hulk: nice color work. subtle muscalature, nice colors....not too dark...not too light. good work.

The New Green Goblin: not too familiar with the new look...but looks good to me.

Power Girl: nice costuming! you got a nice rubbery texture to the costume...great work. i like the flowing cape...very well done. the skin tones are nice...and a very nice starfield as well. good work.

I'm in the process of writing my UIR, but I oughta say a word here... Since everyone else is doing so and all...

stillhbk: I can understand your irritation with what you see as substandard art, especially as some one who's waded through tons of it in UIRing some 80% of this year's updates. But as the others have mentioned, you're being a bit unfair. You don't know MaidenRaine1300's circumstances, what software they have available, etc. You should judge them by the terms of the work they've posted to date. Not everyone can produce "good" art (whatever that means) their third time out. If the next twenty things MR1300 puts out are utterly interchangeable with this one, then it may be fair to start criticizing. But the last artist I can think of here who started with similar work -- Junkyard -- has improved tremendously and is certainly a respected addition to the community. It's far too early to judge MR1300.

And moreover, as Dan said (and Biohaz), it's better to offer constructive criticisms for work you find subpar in the hope that the artist will take note of your thoughts and work to improve. If they don't bother, then just ignore them. That's what I do with artists that don't want to improve or who seem not to care.

UIR...

The White King by Nickice
Another good drawing, cool power effect. It's a better scan than usually, though it still needs some cleaning up.

Gokuastrophe Rmx by Level1
Another good wallpaper. I hope it is the last one, cause something different would be nice.

Evolution Rogue And Gambit by MaidenRaine1300
Pretty good for what I assume is Paint. I'll ditto Dan's advice about the edges. This could also use more shading in the added bits, in an animated rather than painted colouring style. Check out M's work for an example of what I mean here.

Forge In Solitary by NightScroller
Yeah, more detailed art notes would help judge this properly. The metal bits look really flat. I'd suggest you check out Dan's tutorial in the art school.

Eternal Sailor Scouts - Sailor Jupiter by MilleniumBum
Damn! Nice. We wants more. I agree with Dan about the colours, particularly those greens. The arms do indeed seem a bit off, maybe cause of the highlight on the left / screen right one. And speaking of highlights, that on the right / screen left sleeve looks rather out of place as well, it's far too bright. And I agree with Biohaz on the stars. It'd look infinitely better if you do them individually each time. Great piece overall though.

Emma Frost by ShadowHusk
Quite good. Nice work cleaning up the cleavage, I'd not have thought you'd done so if you hadn't mentioned it in the art notes. Good costuming, a nice attempt at the most difficult colour to manip, white. The top and (screen) right bra-thingie are a bit overly bright.

Batman Begins Movie Poster by mikedibella
Good, if spartan, poster. But spartan works for teaser posters, anyway. The jaw does seem overly bright, but it's a good piece overall. But, y'know, why even post a rough draft? You say you want to take more time to add a background and more details. Why not do so and thus get a more complete pic to show us, one closer to the image you had in your head? This would work fine as a finished image, but if it's not finished in your eyes, why post it? Sorry, but I can't help but wonder.

Starfire by mahsess
Pretty good piece, though I second the others' comments about the eyes and the need for some clean-up. I think the lips and eyebrows could also use some touch-up to give them a more realistic and less of a "colourised film" look.

Infinity The Second Time Around by bearbot
Good piece, as always. Nice costuming, nice Posering. Great vibrant colours throughout. I think Doctor Fate and Huntress are my favourites. Some of the anatomy looks a bit wonky, notably the neck / shoulders of the guy on the right-hand side (whose head position looks really odd to me) and the shoulders and arms of the guy on the right hand side (whose shoulders look a bit too horizontal without a sufficient curve, and whose arms seem a bit small). Incidentally, I don't really know who either of those two is, though I recognize the others.

Supergirl In Flight by Powermaster Jazz
Good frankensteining. The hair is seamlessly added, I'd never have guessed it was frankensteined. It's smudgy in spots, though. Good costuming as well, some of the best I've seen from you. The pose looks rather unnatural, but most do for pics of characters in flight. One suggestion, for your entire body of work: you may want to start touching up the skin, hair and backgrounds a bit to make them fit in better with the sort of smudgy, painty look of your costuming. In all of your work to date, the costuming really sticks out in comparison to the rest of the pic.

Tomb Raider by Ed Hopkins
Wow. Beautiful. Favourite pic of the day. Great costuming, the shorts are simply amazing... incredibly realistic, photorealistic even... I'm enormously impressed that you can do that from scratch. The highlights on the tank top are maybe a bit overdone... it just seems to stick out in comparison to the rest of the image, and looks less realististic. Love the edges and seams though. The background is great as well, nice job. I can't even tell which parts you did from scratch, and honestly, I can't think of a higher complement. The reflection's a great touch as well. And I'll have to second Dan's comment about how difficult 3D backgrounds can be to work with... I've had pics where I took some 10-15 hrs for the basic wireframe, and then twice that time fixing small details and getting the camera angle right. I do think it's worth it, mind you, but then I'm nuts. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif

Superman Movie Teaser Poster by gavin north
Wow. Awesome. Damn fine teaser poster, very 3D look to the S. Great lighting as well. I'm still not quite sold on the red text on the red background though. The shadow helps enormously (it's really well done, as the others have mentioned), but I find it still blends together a bit much, especially in the middle. But hey, that's just me, the others clearly think it works fine.

Daveswellingsupermanflight by Temporal Dave
Nice spit-curl, nice frankensteining. The body's kinda blurry, as Biohaz said.

The Hulk by NIMROD X
Welcome to the DCG! And damn, what a debut! Nice drawing, nice colouring, no real problems. The greens really are just about perfect for the Hulk. The pants seem a bit too bright, mostly cause of the highlights. And a different background would improve the pic. But for your first effort, this is an A+.

The New Green Goblin by Spiderman620815
I infinitely prefer this to the classic design, I have to say. The Goblin's a great character, but his old design is just... silly. Especially with those eyebrows (the otherwise awesome) Steve Ditko gave him. Anyway, very nice drawing. The face is beautifully done. The left / screen right leg seems a bit stretched above the knee, but I could be wrong. The line work's a bit inconsistent, it fades out here and there.

Power Girl by Nathauan13
Very nice piece. Good costuming, with nice vibrant colours. I love the rubber texture, it's really well done, good job with the highlights. Nice clean-up on the skin as well, though the legs look rather painty. Very nice cape, though I'd smudge it a bit more to get rid of those lines, it'd be better with just the shading.

uh... i've been reading the posts in this thread. is it gonna be one of those UIRs again?

dan, the skirt on sailor mercury was a pencil sketch i scanned and recolored and blurred slightly and sharpened in some edges. you can see evidence of some pencil marks above mercury's left (her left) leg. i've sort of gotten the hang of it for sailor jupiter. i also frankensteined some parts from pics of skirts i found on the net.

B and Biohaz, i admit it! i'm a lazy ass! haha! i was beginning to wonder when i'd lose those stars and start creating new ones instead. i guess this is the time! thank you so much for the comments! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

weird week of UIR's. if heated debate is something that will spice up the UIR participation or at least visit to the galleries i'm all for it. but think back to when one of your pics was posted....and something like this happened....you thought, "hell yeah...14 posts....lots of reviews for me!" you opened the thread and there were only 3 reviews....a little disappointing.

The thing is, the participation isn't really increasing, you've still just got the usual people UIRing, mostly. It's just that someone posts a comment that makes everyone rush to reply. We've has this happen before with other UIRs, and it'll no doubt happen again. But it's never really had any lasting impact on how many people actually do the things. Maybe we need another lecture from squedge, that's what made me start doing them regularly, LOL.

Dan: I'll admit it, that Bobo is one heck of an artist. I've never seen such imaginative use of feces. And such fascinating themes as well... bananas, sex, bananas and, um, bananas. It's not supposed to be art, so the art lies in the fact that it is art.

We've just moved abroad so I'm unpacking and setting the house up. At the same time I'm trying to get ready for my final year at Uni. As if that wasn't enough we've been hit by two typhoons already with another one coming. But you're right if I spent a little more time writing UIR's than propagating less constructive topic maybe I could squeeze in another review or two.

Thanks to all of you who defended me and for all the encouraging words and advice. It really means a lot for me and my sister to have other people see our work and let us know what you think of it. We take all suggestions into stride and we don't let the discouraging words bother us because we know that everyone has a right to their own opinion and all the jazz. We do only have access to paint, so we do the best that we can do. It isn't always easy to get all the lines that straight just using the mouse especially after doing the picture for awhile, you know when your hand and wrist start to cramp up. We just wanted to put our pictures up to see if we can get anyone else to see our vision as to who should be the characters we love in the movies they make. Thanks again for all the kind words.
