View Full Version : Update in RevUIR - 27 Sep 2004
Just thought I'd start one for once. Review later. And I'll say that this is a first - someone gets both thumbnails for the front page with the same image?

sw: you win the award for the ugliest background color. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif
robotech: it's a nice clean image overall with a nice layout. again, when borrowing elements it's nice to give credit to the original artists. i really don't see the point in using MAX for any of this piece, and even if you did use MAX i don't see any difference in your pic and the original (http://www.dccomics.com/features/robotech/desktop.html), other than the green and blue visors. if i were you, and i knew how to use MAX well enough to model, i would just use this image as a reference and slap it on an image plane and poly model it out, then work it from there. hell at the least use MAX to create the effects as they are going to be more spectacular and realistic. again, nice layout and it does bring back the memories.
copycat: i like the skin tones, but on the other hand it looks very smudged. i would have chose a different background so you could have seen the hair better...but what i see looks okay. i love the eyes.
wargirl: no art notes.
other big three: are you stealing kev's cool backgrounds too http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif . i will bet with this series you learned a lot and have come up with a lot of new projects to try those new techniques on. great work.
joker: i like the text layout. but other than that nothing really stands out...it's just a recolour. i know you colored the scarf to add some pop, but there is still no pop to the image.
nightwing: your costuming is ruined by the filter you applied.
polaris: blah as blah=bad art notes
ben grimm: your mystique is still my favorite piece of yours. i like the rock color, but it just sits flat. try using the selection and the spherize filter to wrap it, or the displacement filter. i would have liked to seen the big paw hands.
flame on: why try a simple fire effect that is a little lacking when you can try a good one at Photoshop Techniques (http://www.photoshoptechniques.com/main/defaulth.php), or just go to Good Tutorials (http://www.good-tutorials.com/) and do a search for fire.
thing: very cool, one of the better things i have seen....and the fact you did it in painter makes it more impressive. i really like the whole piece...very strong and very well done. the one thing i think it's missing is depth. the rocks just don't pop off the piece, some lighting and shading on the edges of each rock would pop them off of the face. still...great work...great thing, and grats on making the front page..................again.
duck: i have actually seen worse movies (the ninth gate, dracula 2000, the things i will do for a date). i like the layout, i think it could just be crisped up a little.
action comics: well....it's just real hard to read that text. also rather than looking sepia toned...it looks muddy. i like the destruction and the whole thing...i just think a few tweaks would kick it up a notch.
supergirl: nice wrinkles. i like the seams, i think the one on the side could be a little tighter, but the seams really look nice. would have liked to seen you go for a more shiny costume, but the one you have works well too. nice logo wrap....and who knew that she had nipples of steel?
harleybrain: friggin sweet! those eyes are gorgeous! the white on the face, perfect. really niec work....i'm sure jellybrain will flip when she sees it.
blink: not your best, but i read the art notes...can't wait for you get your tech back. nice effort...i hope you revisit it.

SW by MaidenRaine1300
It’s ok… There is some odd color bleed that I wouldn’t expect out of Paint and you lost the arms anatomy somewhere in your process.
Robotech 1986 by Level1
Nice… I assume the background is lifted as well… I don’t know if you got much benefit from all the 3d work you did. Sure it sounds cool, but it looks identical to the original. So aside from the text and the motion blur you did the translucent layer?
Copycat by ShadowHusk
Not bad… The skin looks pretty good, I like the hue changes. I like the experiment with the hair; it’s a little too bright but still interesting. I don’t know why but I like the text color changes, it’s something that I have done myself.
The Wargirl by jjmarreiro
This one is a bit too small to do it justice. I do however think I see a number of uncredited work from other artists.
The OTHER Big Three by MilleniumBum
I won’t add to what I have said about these pieces individually other than to say that I have found this to be a very entertaining series and well done to boot.
Brody as The Joker by Starbuck
Not much going on here… I like the shadow, it’s a nice touch. The quote and the text don’t quite work for me.
Nighwing in Moonlight by Starbuck
Ok so it’s Starbuck day… Happy you day… This one works a lot better for me. The mask is a little crunky and the image looks like it went through one too many filters. Did you actually use the image off the cover?
Polaris by Majik1387
It’s ok… the hair is a little flat and under saturated. I like the make-up around the eyes and the background.
Ben Grimm by ali786
Cool… I like the deep shadows. He looks as though he is made of sandstone. I have seen others use this same texturing on the thing unsuccessfully. It generally looks too flat. You handled it quite well and gave it a real sense of depth and volume. Well done.
Flame On! by anaque
There is a lot of strange rectilinear architecture in this image. Did you intend that? It is very distracting to me. The face and the flames work for me though. I like the fire effect.
It's A Chiklis Thing by Biohaz_Daddy
Big little d is absolutely right… fear of over working it made me stop. Maybe someday in the distant future, if I can stomach it, I’ll do the extra work on it.
Revenge Of Howard The Duck: Mock poster by DarrenJSeeley
The layout is great. It really reminds me of old matinee style movie posters. Howard could stand some further development however.
Action Comics 1000!! by Arachnid*Homosapien
Cool idea… The image has an old school AC cover feel to the layout. I don’t understand how the super shirt worked its way over his other shirt though.
another supergirl by stillhbk
Good job on the “S”, and collar. The seams look pretty good for the most part. Most of the wrinkles could use continued work. It’s not enough to put a highlight and shadow next to each other. You need to blend a little with the mid-tone.
Miss Harleybrain by kev_incal
Wow those eyes pop… That fur is amazing. The hat is also quite nice. The face seems disproportionately large to me. The seam on the black glove is so well lit that it almost looks like an outline. Maybe if you varied the tone along it’s length it would look more natural.
Blink by NightScroller
Ok… A simple change of color and simple line work on the flat colored dress are not quite as ambitious as you have been in the past.

Not in a particularily critical mood, so I'll just mention a few of my favorites:
Biohaz Daddy's Thing picture looks great. Classic Comic book form in modern computer art- it's a beutiful thing. (No pun intended.) (Well, actually, why not? Pun intended.)
Kev-Incal's Harleybrain is another one. Fact is, Jellybrain's just got one of those faces that works well on any charicter.
Finally, Millenium Bum's Legion- Did I mention loving this series? I love this series.
Overall, there weren't any BAD ones in this update. A lot of creativity floating around.

Funniest thing I've ever said unintentionally:
