It is a much quoted maxim that there are only seven stories in fiction and that all others are based on them. My research has led me to discover there are 8, and I planned a series of pics, each one depicting the comic story that best defines each story.
Trouble is, I’ve been trying to do it for about 2 months now and haven’t really got that far! Not only am I exceptionally busy with my wrestling training, I’m also somewhat lost in coming up with comics for each story.
So, I’m asking for help, be it of an intellectual or perhaps even co-operative nature. I’m not sure how well this thing would do as a theme day- it really lends itself to scenes, or at least scene-traits (a portrait with some sort of story going on). However, I know that there are thousands of comics that I haven’t read, and in those the best examples are to be found.
The eight stories are…
Cinderella - Unrecognised virtue at last recognised. It, doesn't have to be a girl, nor does it even have to be a love story. What is essential is that the good is despised, but is recognised in the end, something that we all want to believe. The dream come true.
Achilles - The Flawless hero with the Fatal Flaw, be it literal or psychological
Faust- The Debt that Must be Paid, the fate that catches up with all of us sooner or later.
Tristan - that standard triangular plot of two women and one man, or two men and one woman.
Circe - The Spider and the Fly. The seemingly innocent enchantress who casts bewitching spells. Again, the seduction doesn’t have to be literal.
Romeo and Juliet - Boy meets Girl, Boy loses Girl, Boy either finds or does not find Girl: it doesn't matter which.
Orpheus - The Gift taken Away. This may take two forms: either the tragedy of the loss itself, or it may be about the search that follows the loss. This source story influences all tales concerning a metaphorical descent into hell or the depths of one’s own psyche, and stories about loss or grief.
The Hero Who Cannot Be Kept Down- He keeps going, no matter how the odds are stacked against him. Or her.
The last on is the only one I have a clear idea about, so if anyone has some good ideas, or wants to have a go at a pic themselves, then your input is more than welcome.
