View Full Version : Challenge: Artist Mentoring

dperceful

I just ducked out of the 1 hour photo manip thread and it had me thinking. How did I get started in this crazy stuff...and why do I keep doing it? After a stiff drink and a bottle of pills I couldn't come up with an answer, yet I was very sleepy. Joking aside, I just love comics and before the movie boom this was the only way I could see my heroes and villains brought to somewhat real life. I just got done doing a team-up manip with brick over at Heromorph and it was a wonderful process of idea sharing and the like. I've also had the pleasure of being here long enough for other artists to bounce ideas off of me and vice versa, because none of my manips would look anywhere as good as they do now without the ideas and critiques others gave me. This is why you find me, B, Junkyard, Shaylinn, etc on the UIR's a lot...critiquing is the sincerest form of flattery (someone just took time out of their day to comment on your work...good or bad...they took the time).

With all of that said I propose an odd sort of challenge. It's not meant to come across as a holier than thou attitude thing, merely a way to help new artists wanting to get to a higher level in their manipping skills.

Challenge

Artist A submits a request to be mentored
Artist B submits an offer to mentor an artist

we get a few volunteers on both sides, team up, and have at it. Artist A is going to be doing all of the work, Artist B is there to bounce ideas off of, offer comments, offer design tips, show off a trademark technique, etc. It's Artist A's manip...their choice of what to do, their model, etc...Artist B is just there to help out and push your work to new heights.

There is no deadline for this challenge...Artist A decides when the project is finished.

any thoughts, good idea, bad idea...am i jerk for even suggesting this, etc.

I'd LOVE to do this, I've been wanting to really but my art on another level, so I'd love to do this as an 'artist a'

Thanks in advance. Great idea, Dan!

i'll kick off the volunteering. i volunteer as a mentor, for lack of a better term. mentor sounds like i know what i'm doing, that's hardly the case, but i think i have some good ideas and opinions i can share.

Lol, I'll go down as mentor. Even though my old man (Zac) would say my attitude stinks :P

I'd also love to be mentored, but I already get lots of help from Zac, Adam and Bill.

I can be a mentor... if anyone deems me worthy enough.

Dan, you said Artist B submits an offer to mentor an artist. I hope you consulted him - I haven't heard anything from B in this thread yet. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif

duely noted. we obviously have one mentee, trekkie, so at the least he/she (sorry i just cover the bases) will get something positive out of the deal. i have an idea for the senior group of artist if we can't find an even number to pair up. i'll give it until the end of the week, if it's oddly mathced i'll post the new idea in this thread and see what you guys think. do you guys have any suggestions on the current challenge?

you are in that in-between area...so with that said, i'm putting you in the mentee group. basically due to the fact your a newer artist (3 posted pics) with some solid base skills, and i also think that with someone pushing your work....it will be elevated to that next level that will take you out of that in-between area. thanks for participating and volunteering.

well you've been here for over a year...and i think your one of the great new artists to the site. i put you into that elusive in between....much like Biohaz i think with pushing you will be into that next level in your work where you will start doing things in your work that will really amaze you and others.

How about some of you oldtimers put together a series of before and after posts. Like an add campaign for anyone interested in improving their artwork. You could have an early manip you have done side by side with a recent one to dramatize the differences. I think that would show people what is going on behind the DCG. Maybe a title like "look what the forum has done for me" or something along those lines.

howzabout making a pic/poster to promote this event and posting it in the gallery? that way, some of the artists who don't usually go to the boards would be inspired to have a look-see. i know of a few who don't really go to the boards because they don't know about the cool stuff going on like the UIRs. i think some sort of promotion would be beneficial to this project, IMHO. http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif

for all of my leftover mentors, i have a pic i submitted to the gallery to kinda advertise this mentoring thing. we will see if it helps. if not the three artists here get some more mentors to bounce ideas off of, or we kinda pair off with each other...but alot of us do that already. or do you have any ideas...i really would rather help out the new artists...but i'm open to ideas.

i ment to mention this before. mentoring is more a sharing of ideas, helpful hints, challenges, etc. different apps are different apps...the mentee can figure out the technique if properly described to them. the challenge in figuring out how to do something really makes you look at stuff in a differnet light and causes you to break down images to their base elements.

I haven't had a chance to get in touch with Morgan yet as I have been up to my eyeballs in alligators (AKA coverage of Hurricane Charley) but Morgan if you read this I would love to hear what you think of the images I have posted here so far... and what you think I need to work on based on those.

my addy is shaylinn1 (at) hotmail.com ... replacing the (at) with the symbol of course.

Thanks

Well, I don't know about mentor per se, but I can give advice on things I've contended with. Please, do not judge my work in the Gallery as my best stuff (that resizing just kicked me in the head). I use Photoshop CS.

Bill and B- we've been changing over our internet server so my e-mail hasn't been working properly. I'm able to get e-mails but not send them most of the time. I was able to contact B with phase 1, lol. Bill I will definately need you for phase two of my artistic discovery so as soon as I can get my e-mail working, I shall e-mail you.
