Hey, guys,
Each year for my Convention Awards, I use a different version of my mascot "Connie." This year, Marvel cover artist Greg Horn has supplied me with pencils. What I would like to do is find someone that can finish up the piece in a painted-style similar to what Greg does (see Greg's site at http://www.greghornjudge.com).
The Job:
Color/digital paint over a high-rez scan of Greg Horn's pencils for a single figure, no background.
Timeline:
I would like to pick someone by tomorrow night (EST). I would hope to get you the scan Friday or Saturday. I would need the finished piece the following Saturday (January 1st).
The Pay:
$10 by Paypal or US check. If you can't accept payment that way, than there will be not be a cash payment involved. If you have a website, you can have a small ad appear throughout my website for a year. I'm also intending to reproduce the art on a promo trading card and poster. If this happens, I would be willing to send you some copies of the trading card and one copy of the poster.
How to apply:
E-mail with a link to samples or attach a couple in an e-mail to: mail@comicbookconventions.com. Please include the phrase "Connie Coloring Job" in the subject of the e-mail. Otherwise, your e-mail may be deleted.
Well, I think that's it. Any other questions, please direct them to the e-mail above.
Thanks,
Brian Pate, Ower and Webmaster

I think you're going to find that $10 is a rather measley sum for the amount of work, time and effort required by an artist to colour that. $10 is only £5.26, and you couldn't even buy a trade paperback or graphic novel for that amount over here in the UK. You could just about ride on the underground, unless the fare's gone up recently, and with the UK Budget coming up in the new year, I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
Good luck to finding someone who will work for that price.

In a case like this, most people would be appreciative only to work over top of the wonderful Greg Horn's pencils and to get a little exposure. Money isn't necessarily important. I'm considering applying...though I am rather busy this week (and next) and may decide against it. Still, it could be fun for somebody.

I have to agree with Welshcat. Digital painting is not cheap. A coloring single page layout for a comic was $70 a pop back in 2000, pin-ups are more. Digital paintings require some times three times the time to make as just coloring.
Sure there is no background in this one, but pin-ups are not easy to spit out.

Thanks for the feedback. I figured it was worth a shot. I had several people apply last year when it was just coloring involved; I wasn't sure how people would react to the request for digital painting. But I also figured since a lot of you guys do what you do for fun and without any compensation, I might could find somebody willing to do it for a few bucks, some freebies, and some exposure. My website gets about 10,000 daily unique visitors each month (including a lot of industry professionals) so an ad there would be good exposure and could lead to other paying jobs. I've already had one person volunteer to do regular coloring for free on this job. If I can't find a digital painter, I'll probably just have to have it inked and colored normally.

Is there anyway you could supply the pencils for us here so we can take a look at just what kind of task we'd be undertaking? I'm kind of interested, but I don't want to just agree to it blindly, you know?

Okay, guys, you can checkout the preliminary artwork here: http://www.comicbookconventions.com/images/connie05_small.jpg
And here is last year's version so you can see the color scheme: http://www.comicbookconventions.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/connie_Al_Rio.jpg
For what it's worth, I'm willing to double the upfront money to $20.
And let me say, if I can't deliver the high rez scan this weekend (I don't know Greg's schedule), the artist will still get a week to complete from whenever they get the artwork.
Thanks,

Hi, Guys,
I hadn't said anything because there had been a delay getting the final version from Greg and then I thought I had it worked out for someone to do the job, but they keep trying to raise the price so I'm pulling the job back and opening it back up again.
So if you were reluctant to put in for it because of the holidays, here's your chance. Same deal as before...$20 payment and one week to complete it from when you get picked. If you have already submitted for the job, you don't have to do so again. I'll go back through the e-mails I received before, and you will still be considered. If you want to be considered this time, please send me an e-mail with links or jpeg samples in the next day or so. I'll post again when I have picked out someone.
Thanks,
