Transformers Prelude to Energon

Okay, I don't like the new cartoon. It's too whiny and kiddie for me. I had the same problem with Beast Wars until the end of the first season then they started getting into the Cybertron and Generation 1 history. Anyway back to the game.

I'm about 80% completed with the game and I have to say it's a blast, literally.

Story: Basically stop Megatron and eventually Unicron. Megatron is up to something and it's your job to stop him. Your missions will take you thru the Amazon, Arctic, Pacific Islands, and other locales.

Gameplay: Controls are a little clunky and might take a minute or 10 to get used to. Gameplay is mostly done from third person perspective. Your missions consist of stopping the boss at the end of the stage your in. During your mission you will have the opportunity to collect Mini-Cons (basically a power up) to enhance your abilites. The mini-cons give you the ability to glide, launch missiles, cloaking, etc. Your extra powers depend on the mini con you grab and eventually equip. You have the coolest ability from start, transforming. You can do it at will, no power needed. Tranforming is very cool. Have a gang of decepticlones (generic baddies) in front of you, transform and roll out over their asses. I can't tell you how much fun it is, you just have to experience it. The mini cons offer up a nice diversity and some planning as you will need to equip certain ones to make getting pass certain levels a little easier. For example, one of your missions is to infiltrate an aircraft carrier that the Decepticons are using as a base of operations. After doing so, the carrier transforms into Tidal Wave, a friggin' HUGE, and I mean FRIGGIN' HUGE transformer. He's big and bad and the only way to take him down is with headshots. Well one of the minicons you pick up is a sniper rifle, he is key to beating Tidal Wave, because even my heaviest weapon load out barely did anything to him...but the sniper rifle made him alot easier. You have three Autobots to choose from, Optimus Prime, Red Alert, and Hot Shot. Optimus is slow but powerful, REd ALert is well balanced, Hot SHot quick but not as well armored. To me it's depends on your gamestyle as to who you will pick, towards the end though Optimus is the best choice as he can hold a heavier minicon layout.

Graphics: Amazing. The enviroments are huge. No fog effect in place in this game, you can see as far as you can see, it's amazing how large the levels appear to be. Blowing up decipticlones is a treat of explding electrical energy. And let me tell you, the cut scenes are gorgeous. I love watching Starscream come out of a fireball, it's a piece of artwork.

Sound: The sound is a little light, but I wasn't expecting MGS like orchestral pieces and stuff. The voice work is good and delivered well.

Overall, the game is a winner in my opinion. I would say rent it, because if you have the time you can really blow thru this title pretty quick. Yeah there is unlocable stuff, but the replay value to me is very little.
