View Full Version : Reflections on The Incredible Hulk tv series
Just as we had "Reflections on Lois & Clark" in the Superman forum, how about a timely reflection on various episodes or aspects of the tv series?
I remember in "Death in the family" (the 2nd pilot and 2-part story) when the Hulk fought a bear in a river, some of his green paint was coming off.
And who remembers the episode "The First" where Banner meets another man afflicted by the same Hulk curse.
And who can name some of David Banner's aliases?

Oh god, I didn't discover that one until they started showing the re-runs on the Sci-Fi channel. I liked the story, but "the first" was a badly out-of-shape ex-wrestler, painted in a dirty green color. UGH!

WELSHY!
Oh, I think he used pratically EVERY sort of last name in the book that began with a "B" at the end of the last name. I think he might've been David Brown, David Barrows, David Beasley..... I can't really remember ALL of them, but I used to sit and crack up with my brothers, because every week we'd sit in front of the t.v. and make comment about that and say: "O.K., what last name beginning with a B this week do you think he's going to use"? And then we'd all laugh when, indeed, he would give himself a last name with a B! The thing's that used to AMUSE us as kids, huh?
I remember he used David Baxter, David Burnett, David Bailey, David Bannon. I think that last one was in the Incredible Hulk Returns.
There was that silly episode called "Never give a trucker an even break" where there was lots of footage lifted from Spielberg's "Duel", but with a Dukes of Hazzard type soundtrack added. And a lot of that episode was rather contrived just to get it to look like there was one person in the car or truck at a particular time, like having one of the villains searching for his gun in the backseat so you couldn't see him for that particular moment.

I caught the original pilot on Space some time ago and thought it was really well done. I kind of liked the fact that The Hulk was not invulnerable like in the comics. He was more along the lines of an Olympic-level bodybuilder in terms of strength, and he could still be shot and even possibly killed. This added a certain amount of tension that would not have existed if he could juggle planets. Bill Bixby did a great job of conveying the anguish of a man who was unable to save his wife. The pilot was haunting, memorable and sad, a tone that was surprisingly consistent for much of the series. As far as I'm concerned The Incredible Hulk is still the best C2TV adaptation I've yet to see.
Did you know that there was another separate actor who played the "demi-Hulk" - ie, the Hulk between transformations? He actually played quite a bit of the role in Prometheus, but voiced by Bill Bixby. Apparently, he looked uncannily like a cross between Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, and Bixby even took him to his stylist to have his hair done in the same way as his for that episode.
