View Full Version : Never read Hellboy

Is anyone else out there in the same boat as me and never read a single issue of Hellboy? It's not that I'm against it, just never had a burning desire to get an issue. I like Mignola's work, but when I was still collecting comics there were other books I'd pick up rather than give Hellboy a chance. So if anyone can recommend a good issue to start with(that won't be hard to find) then maybe I'll get one.

You and me both, pal. Never read an issue, know nothing about the character, and don't have any burning (pun intended) desire to find out more. Of course, that won't stop me from seeing the film and buying it on DVD! http://www.comics2film.com/UBB/smile.gif

I've never read an issue, but if I had the money, I would definatly pick up the first TPB (well, I DO have the money, but I gotta buy my regular comics first). But I am totally seeing it opening weekend.

Actually, it's more like he's the tentacled demon's screams of pain, but point taken.
Anyway, I highly suggest checking out the first Hellboy trade. It's a nice book to have. It might not be everyone's thing, but I suggest checking it out and at least have it to diversify your collection.
I actually need to reread alot of Hellboy plus some of the short sotires I haven't read yet.
Also, for miscellaneous Mignola fun, check out his Amazing Screw-On Head. It's pure insanity and funny as hell in its darly odd way.

I'll probably pick up a TPB as soon as I finish reading Akira....which is going to be a loooong time from now. Good lord, how in the hell did they ever make an anime out of this! And I thought Watchman was a read...sheesh!

Hellboy is a great read, all of the HB stuff I have read is just great. Some of the newer issues require a little back story, if you have not read some of the earlier stuff you will miss a little. That does not make them unreadable, though.
I recommend all things Hellboy. Mike Mignola keeps pretty tight reigns on his character, so even the novels are pretty good. There are a couple of short stories in the short story collection that I could have done without, but there are still some cool things in there as well.
As before, this is really one of the best comic books on the market today. Very well envisioned, moody, and just plain cool.

Something strange, and you boys will like this, maybe even some of you ladies too. At playboy.com they have a few hell boy stories up, why? I dont know, do I care? not really. naked women and comics, what more could a man ask for? Other than Rock n' roll, gin , drugs ,sex with said women and, forget it just go there. (abayomiunknown in no way endorses the reading of comics.)

Just give me 10 million dollars. I can make my own music, I already get women so I assume that will increase even more(joe millionaire), I quit drinking(killed too many of my braincells as it is) and comics have always been my drug of choice.
everyone hear who has not read hellboy, dont feel bad, i only recentlayy decided to pick it up. FRIGGIN GREAT!

I too was in the same sitch as these poor souls, I started reading HELLBOY about seven months ago, after hearing they were going to make a movie, and WOW!!! i have never read a cooler book!! i now have all the HELLBOY books, some toys and have managed to find some Mignola stuff on ebay. i would suggest that anyone who hasn't read any HELLBOY stuff should do what he other person said(sorry, i'm new to this message board and forgot to check your name, whoever you are) and pick up The Amazing Screwon Head. it's a really funny, simple and probably the easiest way to introduce yourself to Mignolas work as there's no back references and the story is self contained to the one issue, so if you don't like it you've not lost much. plus, you'll be hard pressed to find anything HELLBOY other that TPB's or written novels as i have found that it sells out pretty quickly. right then, i'm oing to stop boring you now and get to work on some funny/intersting things to put up here next time i'm on.

There's a new Hellboy comic on the stands now. It's not Mignola, but it's still pretty cool (especially considering the cover and lead story are by John Cassaday).
It's called "Hellboy's Weird Tales" (I think) and gives you a nice sampling of HB stories.

The Corpse is a definate Hellboy highlight. A favorite HB story of many including myself. Unfortuantely they chop up the frames and you don't get the art of a full page layout, but it's a pretty nice set up.

No, no, no, silly.
Hellboy is a demon, straight from Hell. He was summoned to Earth by the Nazis during World War II so he could be used as the ultimate weapon.
However, allied counter-occult operatives disrupted the summoning ceremony and got possession of the demon, who was actually just a toddler at the time.
The young Demon was raised under the care of Professor Broom, head of the counter-occult team which eventually grew into the B.P.R.D. (Buearau for Paranormal Research and Defense).
Brought up on good, western values Hellboy is a triumph of nature over nurture. Although it's a constant struggle, his human upbringing wins out over his demonic destiny.

Hello. Back after a short spell.
Actually, Robbo, have to add that the post by D.K. Hood is somewhat correct. In one of the short stories, it is implied that Hellboy is the spawn of a high ranking demon of Hell and a human woman. Having trouble remembering which book that was in, but it was implied.

Well ... technically the Allied forces didn't interupt the ceremony, they just found Hellboy when he popped up at a different location than the ceremony was being held. I guess that's sort of interrupting it but its not as dramatic as a bunch of Americans going in with guns blazing (which is how it is in the upcoming movie I think).

Well, perhaps my memory is hazy, but my recollection is that the allies actually had their own mystic expert working a ceremony simultaneous to the nazi summoning and THAT is why Hellboy "popped up at a different location."
So, if the comic is as I recall, technically they DID interrupt the ceremony.
Anyone have the funny books in front of them?

Well damnit, I've read Hellboy now! This threads no good to me anymore. Can somebody close it, or should we leave it open for the others that may not have read Hellboy yet?
BTW, I read Hellboy: The Conqueror Worm. Cool, in the strongest sense of the word. Bad story to start reading Hellboy though; so many references to other Hellboy stories. Still, that didn't detract from my enjoyment.

I say leave it open for others. Plus you still got more Hellboy to read. Heck, even I need to finish reading some of the shorts as well as rereading the main stories.

Guests can post? OMGWTFBBQ?! I'm a moderator and I'm surprised.
Anyway, yes, tehya re still making Hellboy comics. The last Actual Hellboy comic was the two parter The Island. It reveals some weird origin stuff as well as the usual weirdness.
If I may borrow from here (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=97568#post97568) instead of looking up my books which aren't with me right now anyway:
The trades are:
1. Hellboy: Seed of Destruction
2. Hellboy: Wake the Devil
3. Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Others
4. Hellboy: The Right Hand of Doom
5. Hellboy: Conqueror Worm
Then there is the two issue Third Wish folowed by the twi issue The Island.
That's all the Mignola work
There is also a mini series Hellboy: Weird Tales 1-8 which are by various artists featurings short stories. There are two trades of that one.
There's also a couple BPRD mini series which are also cool, written by Mignola with art by Guy Davis.
There are a few more comics as well as some novels mentioned in that link.
The latest news is that Mignola is going to break from drawing the main Hellboy books too. Lee Bermejo is said to be taking over for the rest of them.
