Well, I just read this interesting single volume manga called Alive. It is about an inmate on death row who gets a second chance to live. Yet where he goes may be worse than an execution. I don’t want to give away more here. I suggest you check out the manga yourself.
You can find more about it and even translated scans (and maybe zips of them) here: http://www.snoopycool.com/manga/alive/index.htm http://www.omanga.net/?cid=alive
I started reading it and really got into it. Then I realized I only had half of the ten chapters. Doh! So I had to find the rest on Direct Connect ++. I then went out later that day and went by a Japanese market. I was looking trough some of the phone book manga and stumble upon an article and/or ad for an Alive movie. I had to look into this.
Then I found the site and trailer for the movie. It certainly looks different. If not obvious from the font of the title and the cloudy background the text in the trailer is on, you can look at the special effects too and see what American film influenced this one. Matrix. The manga never had such a.. well.. Matrix design or special effects. Hopefully some of the effects and ‘magic’ from the manga will be main maintained. This is likely just added effects and translation on how some of the powers from the manga. Kinda like how Spider-sense became more bulletime-ish in the Spidey film. I find it interesting that The Matrix is influencing comics and, Asian action films, and anime which The Matrix itself was influenced and shaped by.
Other than that, the film seems to be a faithful adaptation. I recognized scenes and characters even if I didn’t under stand the language. Along with the Matrix effects, they also seemed to have added some more or longer fight scenes. Hopefully we also get some more of the psychological scenes too. This story defiantely was interesting and I can’t wait to see this film. I suggest you check out the manga and the trailer.
You can find the movie’s website yourself at www.alive-movie.com (http://www.alive-movie.com) including a trailer.
