If Dawn of the Dead (the original) ever happened, a Wal-Mart Supercenter would be the first place I would head to.

Then Hell must already be full based on some of the people I've seen at Walmart.

Lock me in a Target, and I'm good for at least three or four weeks myself.
Minion: Would shoot himself after one hour in a Wal-Mart

Hey, what's up with Ikea suddenly being in love with the wood finish? I went looking around for a metallic/black entertainment center and couldn't find anything that suited my tastes and needs (anything that suited my needs was wood-finished and anything that suited my tastes lacked the space for all my electronics, DVD's, etc., although I have remedied the DVD issue in the meantime). So, I went to Ikea on a recommendation thinking they'd have what I need, even though it may be a bit kitschy. No such luck. Fucking 99% of their selection is wood-finished, now. I'm getting to the point where I'm going to build my own.

If you built your own wouldn't it be easiest to do out of wood? Then paint it?
Ikea is the Swedish Mosh Pit. They have some ok stuff. But not tons.

That's the plan. Haven't decided what wood I'm going to use but it won't be particle board or plywood. Pine is one that comes to mind for smoothness and strength. Any other suggestions? Besides the fact that I will have the absolute most-redneck entertainment center of any Cinner?

You could make it more redneck by making it metalic using vinal siding.
In my experiance pine is pretty sturdy. Up in Canada we get really good ceder. If you're gunna paint it the wood doesn't matter as much. You want sturdy, but I hope that was rather obvious.

I love bent plywood furniture. So go hole yourself up somewhere else and leave me alone.
I'll have all the Swedish meatballs and lingonberries to myself, I was going to invite you, but you can just fend for yourself outside. :smirks:
If it's metal furniture you want, check out Crate and Barrel. I'd stay there, but they don't have food. :ohwell:
Tell you what. You bring over some Crate and Barrel stuff, and I'll let you have some showroom space at Ikea, and we'll share the food. :hugs:

This definitely beats the guy who spent 16 hours in a Home Depot. But he kept a halfway funny journal (http://typicalcrap.net/home_depot/hdlog.shtml) about his stay.

No joke!
Where else can you get laundry detergent, milk, and King King?
If only Rush Limbaugh was on the radio at this hour. I could listen to him all the way there.

Pretty much any regular grocery store. Have you seen one without a video rack lately?

This is the entertainment center my husband built for (or around) our TV. The top center portion holds all our AV equipment, while the sides hold the DVDs. I think he used pine (PM me if you want me to double-check), he used at least two coats of black paint, and he special ordered the glass for the AV shelf at a cost of only about $10. I think it turned out well, and we get compliments for how the whole TV/entertainment center fits into the corner.

Looks good. I'd definitely be interested in knowing how he structured it (bolts used, were mollies used?, etc.) since it looks very sturdy. The only catch is I'll have to build a complete setup since it will need to support the weight of the TV as well (27" non-spherical CRT).

Negs, That looks like the first Entertainment Center I ever bought. It was $100 from an Ames store. It had the glass door on the front for the DVDs and the side shelf.
