I think the folks who brought down the house this year with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, should get this job. I believe that they could bring to this project EXACTLY the sort of thing that we would expect that the folks at Marvel would want to bring to life with their first super powered group. Or is that OVER-stating the obvious?? Let me know how y'all think! Please........you know......SHARE!
Well, true they could certainly render those alien worlds that the FF visit, or the negative zone. But I want to see the first FF film set squarely in Manhattan, and maybe only have a few minor visits to these other dimensions. Leave the planet hopping for the sequel, I say. I don't want to see a sequel to Lost In Space!

Well, I didn't mean it like that, actually. I was just saying that the team of people who did Lord of the Rings could do the Art Direction and Make-Up for this film..... if they keep it squarely in NY, that's not a problem with me at all. I didn't mean to suggest that these people be hired so's to bring in an "alien-styled world" to the Fantastic Four. I just meant that I thought they did such a great job on the other films, that they would do an equally great job on this one.

If Doom is in the film, the LOTR team will really have a chance to strut their stuff, because the action will probably take place in both NYC and Latveria! Just as New Zealand made a convincing Middle Earth, it will be a challenge to portray Latveria as the almost primitive county it is under Doom's rule, at least in comparison to the ultra modern Manhattan the FF inhabit.

OH, without a DOUBT Doom is in this! I think whoever they get as make-up people are going to have a LOT of fun with Victor Von! I'm going to want to see who they bring in to dress the set for this film when they go to his Kingdom in Latveria. That's why I thought the folks who brought "Lord of the Rings" to life might be able to do a knockout job of this. Can you imagine what they will make Doom look like? Plus his surroundings?? It should be awesome! But first: WHO to bring in for it? There were other outstanding art directors and makeup people in films in 2003 who were terrific, but the LOTR people would seem, to me, anyway, to be the no-brainer choice here.

Anyone read today's news?? They say that the guy's who gave us the "Hellboy" make-up department are getting the nod for THIS film. Well, from what I could read, what they say is that these dude's (and DUDETTES, I'm assuming), are going to create The Thing. I don't know if that means that they are going to create just make-up effects for close-up and medium shots, or if they mean that they aren't going to be going the CGI route after all. What do you all think? Please........SHARE!
The latest news is that we might have a possible look at the Thing for the FF movie:

Overall he's okay, but I have to say that I'm not so impressed with his face. I'd rather he looked more like the Marvel Legends Thing figure (http://actionfiguresbygofigure.com/product1648.html) as that version looks more comic like and has more character, showing that slightly grumpy but teddy-bearish quality. The maquette version in the above fanfeed link seems to lack character and doesn't look as loveable.

I sort of agree with batmanfan. I did like this maquette, and I thought that the face was very believable. I thought it sort of captured the idea of Ben, who was caught in a brooding moment. I don't think that it's quite indicative of The Thing throughout the ENTIRE film, Welshy. I think it's Ben caught in a particular moment. Either way, I liked what I saw.

WELSHY!
Well, I took a look at this version, and I thought that the brow was something that could've been included on the maquette (that sloping, up and down thing his eyebrows do is a CLASSIC Ben Grimm/Thing), but overall, like I said before, I like what they've come up with for the film. If indeed, that maquette is for the film. Is that some sort of prototype that is going to be eventually done CGI, or are they going to be doing something with elaborate costuming and make-up? THAT is the question!

I think the big brow thing might look silly and cartoonish if used in the film. I liked this rendition very much, and wouldn't want it any other way.
Also, let's not forget that he's a guy who's recently become an extremely deformed individual. I doubt he would be all smiles. I'm hoping for a little bit of humor from the "Thing", but not too much. He need's to be (dare I say) a bit "Grimm".

It's cool to be very "punny" about Ben being GRIMM, Marco! I for one agree with that assesment. I always thought the name "Grimm" sort of connoted "big, brutish", anyway. So, yes, I think that maquette version that was shown at that show looked very much on the money.

It turns out that the maquette that we've been all looking at is NOT the one that will be used for The Thing. Apparently, it was a model that had been submitted for consideration by one f/x house that was bidding for the gig. But apparently they lost out to the people who did Hellboy effects. Well..... one can only hope that they will be able to come up with something even better. If they turned down THIS f/x house for the job, and the Hellboy team one the gig, I can only IMAGINE what the winners submitted for consideration! I just hope that we can all get a look see at THAT one, before the film comes out. That would be cool if we could all get a sneak look at it. But I doubt that we will. I be that they are going to want us to all be surprised by what the f/x wizards come up with!

So..... the actors are going to be fit with plaster body casts for their costume fitting and make-up effects for this flick. And apparently, they ARE going to be using some sort of body suit that is going to be for The Thing. Michael Chiklis is going to be running around in some sort of concotion instead of it being primarily a CGI Thing. Personally, I can't help but keep thinking of that first FF film (I saw stills from it), and I thought that they had a really BAD Thing suit. Well, here's some sort of hope: Roger Corman only produced that film for 800 grand...... so I'm sure that they'll find something much better for Chiklis with the deeper pockets that 20th Century Fox has for THIS baby.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I was hoping for a CGI Thing. I was impressed with what they did in the Hulk, and was hoping for something similar for the Thing, but I guess they want to keep him more practical, I just hope they don't end up with Roger Corman type Thing like in the low budget flick.

I was also hoping for a CGI Thing. But word is out now, that he will be wearing a suit. I am very worried about this. As we all know, the special FX guys who did HellBoy are doing this film. Even though I really liked the film, I couldn't help but feel that Hellboys large arm and chest looked very "foamish'". I could not believe for a second that it was natural piece of his body. Nor did I get the feeling he was a solid muscle-bound hero. I kept finding myself inspecting the scenes, looking for parts where you could visibly see he was soft. It's kinda'like when you watch those old Hercules movies, and laugh at the parts where the heavy boulders and rocks really look like painted foam chunks. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I've gotta admit, I was hoping that they would go the CGI route. I, too, did really like what they did in Hulk. Like I said earlier today, I think that having the deep pockets over at 20th Century Fox is going to be a good thing in which they are probably going to come up with something a lot more amazing then what they had for a film that had a TOTAL cost of 800 G's. I mean, they didn't even have enough money for the advertizing, for God's sake, in the first one. I wouldn't get too scared by this, though. Chiklis DID say that they were going to incorporate some sort of CGI into the film for certain scenes, so I don't think we should rule out ALL hope as yet.
According to the FF messageboard, Tim Story said at the SDCC that the art direction will be VERY Kirby-inspired, with lots of cool gadgets in the background as in-jokes for the fans.
This sounds pretty cool. I'd like to see a whole retro-sixties feel to the movie, especially with some of the designs. I hope to see the Baxter Building featuring as well - something that remains faithful to the comic, not a redesign or even "Four Freedom's Plaza".

Now that's an interesting thing to read! I just hope that they bring in the right art design people to capture that look. In these departments, I don't think I can start throwing out names, but I did really like the production design for Spider-Man 2, in the lab where Doc Ock brought the reporters and scientists in to view his creation. I would really like to see them capture the scientific genius that Reed Richards is, by the same token, really capture New York City the way Jack Kirby was inspired. I guess the way that WELSHY was just saying!
