 Joss Whedon made some interesting quotes in his interview in several genre magazines.
The scanned article below will take you to the interview.

According to Whedon, he wants to do away with the star spangled number that we have identified as our iconic Wonder Woman. Say it isn't so. Perhaps, he'll show the full regalia later in the film like in Batman Begins but please let's not completely change the uniform.

Any thoughts peeps?

i'm guessing he's planning to use something along the lines of Diana's warrior garb in the Stoned storyline. a bit Xena-ish but marketable and practical. i think the leather he mentioned was for the armor's straps and skirt with the tassles carrying one star each. but i do wish he wouldn't drastically change the costume. he wants an icon? well the costume itself is iconic! it has survived over the years and is easily one of the most recognizable suits next to Superman and Batman.

In 1974, Cathy Lee Crosby played Wonder Woman, and in other than her traditional costume (See url below). To my recollection, it flopped.

Yeah, I remember a documentary that was about some of the more iconic super heroes (Superman, Batman, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and more), and they had a segment about Wonder Woman. Back in the 60's or 70's, there was a huge feminist movement. DC was worried that Wonder Woman's costume might upset them. So they changed it into a more casual white pantsuit. No logos, no "Golden Lasso of Truth", no armbands, no crown, no nothing. And for a while, she was more like DC's version of Nick Fury. Well, DC got a huge backlash over it. Not only from her fans, but from the feminist movement, too! Since then they stuck with her more traditional garbs.
Now Whedon's decision to put her into a more practical, possibly, black, leather outfit does make sense, him wanting to keep her in her Greek roots and do away with anything American, but then it wouldn't be Wonder Woman, would it. I mean, her outfit gave me some nice memories. Who among us didn't have a girlfriend dress up like Wonder Woman, or at least imagined it, for a night of fun (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, if you know what I mean)?
Anyways, I hope Whedon does realize the precedence of messing with WW's star-spangled funderoos.

The custome should look like this:

I never liked the star spangled panties. A Greek character shouldn't wear the "american flag".

Yeah. Good point. Though in the middle of WWII patriotism called for star spangled heros. Surpised Batman didn't get stars and stripes. I guess telling America to buy war bonds and to "Slap a Jap" was enough.

I think either a skirt like that would work. Or maybe jsut for some battle scenes. Maybe jsut dark navy shorts? Meh. Not really. The battle skirt would work. It certanily looks more like something an Amazon would wear.

I just want them to keep the gold breastplate.

Red, white and blue is very important to WW- since the perez reboot, the reason she wears those colors is because her costume is based on the American flag, which Diana Trevor had with her when she died so heroically on the island back before Diana (her namesake, remember?) was born. It's logical in the context of the characters history (although you are right Xenos that her color scheme was originally a the product of the anti-everyone-else-but-americans brand of patriotism during the time of her creation.)

Also, you guys should remember Diana, nor the amazons are truly greek. Hippolyta was greek...but the amazons are multi-cultured. They are the souls of women from every race, and as such have mostly been drawn as a mix of ethnicities for the last 25 years. The greek elements are more cultural, with Hippolyta being athenian, and with them having greek gods for patrons. Diana herself is about as above and beyond race as you can get, being made of clay. (though she is usually drawn to look like her mother, and therefore presumably greekish). I like to think of the amazons as a whole and esp. Diana of being representative of a very global, one human race type of outlook.

Ironic considering the gender issue isn't it?

About costumes, I love the classic costume and they pulled it off for superman (so far). But if they will change hers, I would prefer they added more realistic elements, like a maybe some of the Kindgom come armour elements. I wouldn't mind a more battle ready breastplate, and it would be easy to keep the same basic, iconic look. For the bottoms, I wouldn't mind the little skirt you have posted above, but it does bring Xena to mind. Maybe the loincloth like from Kingdom come.

Look at these custom dolls on this web page...I really like the skirt look on the Diana version. And actually, the chestplate, girdle and the tiara on the Hippolyta version look good to me too.

 Though I would hate to see the star spangled number go in Whedon's vision, I still hope retains the elements that make Wonder Woman who she is and that he doesn't stray too far from the path. More importantly, I hope a good script comes out of this and not just some hacked up job thrown in together.

I just posted an idea for a plausible WW movie/comic book costume in the gallery. No idea when it'll show up and I don't have another link to it as yet. But basically, my idea is to get rid of the patriotic color scheme as it doesn't make sense for WW. She's certainly no American and she's not a representative of modern Greece ... why should her colors reflect that? As for Trevor's mom or whatever, not good enough reason for me.
I prefer replacing the red and blue with white and keeping the gold as is. Lose the star-spangled motiff. Diana would look and dress like a mythical statue come to life. I like the idea of the KINGDOM COME hipless dress and the battle-sandals of DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN. Damn, I wish I could show you what I mean. Hopefully that jpg shows up soon.

:( Sorry Fire I got to agree with Easy on this one. The costume looks alot like She-Rah from the Masters of the Universe series.

Yeep. You're right! It does ... wow, I totally forgot about the female version of He-Man ... wait did She-Ra have sandals and a hipless skirt too? The color scheme is similar ... actually I'm having a hard time remembering exactly what She-Ra looked like ... anyone have a pic or link to a pic?

Regardless, still think her red blue and gold motif is too similar to Superman's scheme.

I think she did.

I think WW would look better if the gold parts were silver, the tiara and her belt. And maybe keep the red, but make it a dark red, kinda like Daredevil's costume from the movie. And then have that hipless dress idea, I like that. Maybe that would work better.

Why not go with more metallic hues.
Instead of red, copper/red. Use silver or burnished steel instead of white. Turn the blue into something closer to black.

Maybe WW could have copper/bronze greaves with a silver/steel line down the middle instead of red and white boots. A bronze/copper and gold cuirass.

I could be wrong though.

Kinda zipped down to the part about Wonder Woman. Granny panties? That's a weird thing to call it. Well, I've always liked that star-spangled miniskirt better. Maybe he could use that.

Lets bring back the conversations here. I think that the costume needs some modern look. Maybe something new in the gold. More design improvements work. Ok maybe just for Batman but it can work. Superman got a smaller S sign. Maybe WW can have a bigger...forget I said that. :o

Technology...CGI can do anything.

I posted this a while ago but no one responded to it, so I'll recycle it now:

i really liked the design in the comic of the armor WW used when she cut off Medusa's head after being blinded. tone down some of the reds and blues, and i'd think we have a winner! :D

couldnt find a good pic of the armor, but its from this issue. kinda thinking with the armored boots, gloves, armored skirt, etc., but minus the helmet

I'm not very much into the gladiator look with that helmet. Feels wierd. I would like to see her have that costume though because it looks like an old fashion thing that has a modern look. The skirt looks wierd though...and tiny

here's a 12 doll figure of the armor i found:

http://www.toymania.com/customcorner/cc12/amazon/BattleArmorWW2.jpg

her boots were clunkier tho in the comic. loving the armored skirt. the gloves too, tho they were brown in the comic and should stay brown/black for the movie.

The gloves look a bit like they should be on a skaterboarder than WonderWoman. But on the boots, I think they can work but from the looks of that doll I have this wierd feeling that she has a costume connection with the Power Rangers now.

Great artist BTW on that cover. 8)

 Though I liked Wizard's interpretation of this ensemble for an Ultimate retelling of the Amazon princess, I think the loincloth and laced up bustier might suffer some kind of wardrobe malfunction during a heated battle on screen.

I like the portrayal of WW's 'skirt' in effekdtmentality's recent JLA piece. It's a got the greek skirt element, but also the hanging loincloth thing...good combo. I think that might be a good movie look...esp combined with the right other elements...hmm, thinking, thinking...
