You know those quiet shows that kinda appear on the scene, garner enough of a following to stay on, yet fly under the radar? Even moreso, there doesn't seem to be a real attempt at pushing said program? I would say that "The 4400" would be one. A piece of original USA programming, this show appeared in 2004, completed a six episode first season, and quietly segued into a second season, which has just ended. Season three is filming right now.

In case you missed it, this show is about a mysterious agencies that abducted 4400 humans from various points in time. Then all at once, they were redeposited back on Earth. And as time went on, we began to find out they had been...changed in ways. Who did this? Why did they do this? What will be the results of these changes? These are the initial questions the show poses.

Great start. I like a mystery. I like a world/scenario to explore. And we do have that, yessir. How about my characters?

Well, fortunately, we have those, too. Our first organization on the scene is the Department of Homeland Security. This brings a combination of the menace mentality and the country standing up to take notice. It's the NW/Seattle branch of the DHS, one that, until this moment, was regarded as a sleepy backwoods office, and now holds the line on the biggest event of the twenty first century. Peter Coyote plays Dennis Ryland, a chief inspector marking time to retirement, now attempting to use his limited resources to contain this phenomenon. Two of his top agents are Tom Baldwin (Joel Gretsch), whose nephew vanished and was one of the returned 4400. His son is in a coma, and his condition is connected to his nephew's disappearance. Jaccqueline Mackenzie plays Diane Skouris, a science type formerly with the CDC. She has also taken custody of Mia Rutledge (Conchita Campbell), an eight year old girl who "knows" things, also one of the 4400, who disappeared some time in the late 40s.

The 4400 are released from their initial government custody, and almost immediately, their influence is felt. A man is revealed to have telekinetic powers, and his desperation to get money to help his wife reveals the corruption of his former employers. A blue collar guy who slings fish at a market finds he now posesses superhuman vitality, and proceeds to lay the smackdown on the thugs roaming through areas in his community. Tom Baldwins nephew is found to posess the ability to manipulate the life force in organic beings, for various effects. And one of the 4400, a wealthy hotel mogul, is seeking to rally the returnees, ostensibly to "protect" them.

Of course, the rest of the world is concerned, and at the fringes, violent lunatics make their presence known.

What will it all mean? I'm staying tuned to find out.
