It looks like you used a number of filters and layer effects on this piece. Which isn't always bad if you keep a few things in mind.

You said you used liquify, hue/sat and levels on his skin which is probably why his skin almost looks like it has the texture of old film grain. I would have suggested using one of the smoothing skin tutorials in the Art School to help alleviate this.

Also you need to keep the ambient lighting in mind when costuming a character. All of the lighting you have on the suit shows a strong light source coming from the far screen right but the original image has a softer lighting from the left side.
