View Full Version : I'm Skipping Work Today

First time I've ever done this, but God does it feel good.
And it's not even 10 AM yet!
I woke up ten minutes late, thought about calling them and saying "oh, crap, sorry, I'm late, I'll be there soon."
But then I decided to let them call ME this time.
And how long did it take for them to realize I wasn't there?
One Hour and Fifteen Minutes.
Yeah.
So this is a day for me. I have a small list of things to get done, and then a free afternoon, I think.
Any ideas on what to do with myself? Any good stories of what you've done while playing hooky?
I've spent the morning so far listening to Oasis and cleaning my bedroom. Oh! And I caught the last fifteen minutes of a Brady Bunch rerun.
The dangerous life I lead....let me tell you..
Well.... I was about the best at being late/playing hooky without losing my job for years. Every single day that I went in to work, I was a half hour to an hour and a half late. Some days I just didn't go in. I was so good at my job, though, that it took them 2 years to fire me for it. And they still didn't want to.
That being said, I no longer think that way. If you don't really like your job, then I suppose it's fine to not show up or call in. If you want to keep your job, then the idea is to at least roll over in bed, call them, and then go back to sleep. You don't have to lie and say you're sick, just tell them you can't make it in. Not calling or showing up in is a much bigger sin than just calling in and saying you aren't coming.
Now, to enjoy your day off, I say take a short roadie, listen to some loud music, and treat yourself to lunch in a truck stop. Endless entertainment there. Just sit at the counter and listen to conversations around you. Then, drive back close to home, and hit your local bar for an afternoon of boozing fun. I'll tell you, the people who go to the bar at 2 in the afternoon are exponentially more interesting than the schlubs who hang out after 10. Some of my favorite people are 2-6pm bar people. The ones who go out later are there for one or both of two things: getting hammered and getting laid.

Wow. I'm listening to Oasis right now (on dc101, Sue Ellen).
Kahlan, baby, I'd like you to give me a job.

Well, I could really use a "pool boy", but I'd probably have better luck pulling that off if I actually had a pool.

I hate to be the voice of reason here - but
Everyone skips work sometimes, not a problem, but not calling them to tell them you won't be in is a sure way to get yourself fired. There's nothing wrong with playing hookie, IMO, but you're not "sticking it to the man" by not calling in - you're screwing yourself Oz-style.
(and this fills my responsibility quota for the day, so now I'm going to do something very very bad.)

F it. Life is too short to just "do what is expected of you." F everyone, do what it is that YOU want and if no one else gets it, F 'em.
Also, I don't advise you listen to what I'm saying here. :)

You know if you make the F stand for Fondle, that sentence is REALLY funny.
"Fondle everyone,..."

Okay, so, to ease concern...I work at Target. Don't really like it, and will be leaving soon enough.
That said, I've been there for over three and a half years, and have never so much as called in sick. I've been what I consider "frighteningly loyal" to a place like that, and usually go in there to get told everything that I do wrong and nothing that I do right. (which basically means....I'm with you Kirk. But I digress)
Considering that they keep an attendance record, and probably have as long as I've been there, I considered this day a calculated idiocy. I'm not "sticking it to the man" or anything else you scolded me for Mae, I just needed a mental health day. I'll apologize tomorrow, maybe get a light slap on the wrist, and that will be that.
If I didn't know the risk/reward ratio, I wouldn't have done it. Simple as that.
And if it makes y'all feel better, I wound up spending the day at the fucking slow as hell mechanics, who spent 7 hours just *inspecting* my brakes, in order to tell me it'd cost $675 that I don't have in order to repair them.
Yee. Ha.
At least the morning was great...
