I really liked it. Doesn't have much story, and what plot it does have doesn't make a whole lot of sense (particularly in the last act).
But it looks great, sounds great, Radha Mitchell is convincing enough in the lead, and it captures the creepy vibe of the game. Certainly a lot better than "Resident Evil" did. It's not a pulse-pounding movie (it could've done with being a good twenty minutes shorter), but I enjoyed it more than, say, the recent, more in-your-face scares of the "Hills Have Eyes" remake.

Silent Hill was extremely disappointing for me, I was expecting more. I played the video game when it first came out, and I was scared as hell by playing the game. The thing about the game was it did have a good plot but the movie didnt really follow it. The movie wasnt bad but I had alot higher expectations.
Yes i did sense the "Lesbo" feel, but I think it was one alot more then the other.
Also I didn't get the ending...

Did anyone else think they died in the accident on the way to Silent Hill? My friends and I are split. About half of us say they died in the accident, the other half says the reaper killed them in the balcony of the church.

I figured that they died in the accident. The only people who exist in Silent Hill (and by that I mean the ash-covered Silent Hill) are dead. That was how they were able to be in that 'version' of the town at the same time that her husband and the cop were in the 'real' town at the same time.
Of course, that also means that the cop had to have been dead as well. Which the overturned bike at the end seems to suggest.

I knew they had to be in some sort of limbo for her to be in the same place as her husband under completely different circumstances at the same time but I started out with the idea that they were alive but trapped on another plane of existence by some evil force. As time went on, though, there were just too many things pointing to them being dead.

But where'd their bodies go? They were missing from the car and the bike. That suggests that they got sucked into an alternate dimension. I think that Alessa sucked them in when they got close enough to SH, and at the end, released them from the town (the road was repaired), but couldn't, or wouldn't return them back to "the real world." All she needed was Rose.
Erm, the plot of the movie almost exactly followed the plot of the game. Not the details, but the overall plot of finding her daughter, and the details of the girl...that was pretty close to the game.
I didn't like the videogame-ish explanation towards the end, and something about the method with which Alessa seeks her retribution didn't quite work for me, but overall, I was really pleased with the movie. It sure as heck looked great. Loved the odd camera angles that mimiced the game.

Visually impressive, but confusing. Did Alessa ever actually die? Did they build the dream realm as she died? How could she summon those people's souls into her dream? What is Dark Alessa, an aspect of Alessa's personality? Why wasn't she "born" into the real world? How come men can't get into the dream world?
Why did the dream have to end now? Couldn't they have gone on like this forever? Why was there a time limit on the darkness? Why couldn't that pyramid headed-guy go hunting all the time? That character was particularly reminiscent of "The Cell."
We need more explanation as to the motivations of Alessa and so Dark Alessa. One of them refused to die, but what was Alessa's deal? That dialogue in the ending confrontation was horrendous, script and delivery.

This is a response to your post, Belledame but I thought it more appropriate to put it in a spoiler window since it talks about the end of the movie.
They left it wide open for a sequel and I'd really like to see some resolution as to what actually happened to Rose & Sharon (did The Reaper kill them in the balcony? Were they dead already? If so when did they die? Are they still alive?) as well as an explanation of what The Reaper was after and what she got. Whe know what Alessa was after and it was what happened at the end of the movie but we still don't know The Reaper's motives. As for Alessa, I do think she was dead the same as everyone else. It was her torture that started the fire, killed everyone and allowed Dark Alessa (aka The Reaper) into their particular limbo.

Forgive me. I have to get used to the new bells and whistles.
The truth seemed to indicate that the cultists all died in the fire, but Alessa survived and was placed in an iron lung. If she didn't die at the same time as the cultists, it's hard to understand Alessa being able to pull them into her worst nightmare. Fine, the cultists created their own limbo but why was Alessa able to violate it and impose her concept on them? They can't have been running to the church for refuge before the little girl died.
I hadn't thought that all three died on entering Silent Hill. If so, that's a shame. Especially for the cop. Most intriguing is the notion of Alessa having died as a child, childishly clung to this need for vengeance, but having grown up inside the dreamscape. What would foster a sense of maturity in her mind? Dark Alessa didn't even grow up.
