I finally bought an LCD projector last week as well as a 16:9 240cm by 135cm (95"x51", 108" diagonal) projection screen. It's absolutely breathtaking. If any of you have been toying with the thought of buying a projector and put it off for example for financial reasons, all I can say is: Sell your car or get a second mortgage, this is the best investment you're ever going to make.

I was worried that the image would appear pale or fuzzy, but even in not-so-favorable lighting conditions, the colors are bright and the image is clear and crisp. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that it's clearly better than at the movie theatre - except for theatres with digital projection. I tried some "visually intense" movies first, like Star Wars:RotS (the space battle at the beginning is the perfect reference for any projector due to the colors and the deep blacks in the background) or Lord of the Rings:FotR and the results are absolutely breathtaking.

I can't imagine going to the movie theatre again anytime soon. I get a DVD for the price of two movie tickets and I don't have to deal with ringing cellphones, talking theatre-hopping kids who kick my seat, parents who bring their toddlers to the movies, 15 minutes of commercials before the movie as well as expensive concessions. As far as I'm concerned, cinema is dead.

It doesn't stop with movies - it's perfect for gaming as well. Playing F-Zero GX on the huge screen is an astonishing experience. I use a PC as DVD player in the living room, so I can also play Quake or any other computer game on the big screen. And then there's the upcoming soccer world cup, of course.

By the way, I have never cared much about Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, HDTV, etc., because I always thought that it was just another way to sell the same movies once again. Now I know that I was right. If I can get a perfect picture onto such a large screen out of a DVD with its fairly low NTSC or PAL resolution, then I really see no reason for upgrading my movie collection. Sure, the picture could end up being slightly better, but I doubt that it's a "necessary" improvement like that huge step from VHS to DVD was.

*lol* Well, if you're watching Russ Meyer movies (assuming that's you on that picture), you do need a 125" screen. ;)

I'm actually a proponent of HD-DVD (not Blu-Ray). However, I would agree with you, MPG, in that getting a HD-DVD of a movie NOT filmed in HD is pointless and a waste of money. The key will be when movies are filmed in HD. I'll give it two to three years before that becomes SOP.

It is actually my opinion that the average Joe most likely won't see a difference that is significant enough between HD and standard PAL/NTSC. In my opinion it's similar to MP3 vs. CD quality. I'd say that there aren't too many people who can tell the difference between a pop song that is encoded as 192kbps MP3 vs lossless CD quality. There are some audiophiles of course who can certainly hear the differences, but for the average consumer, it's nearly impossible to tell the difference. I think it's not too different with HD. I am sure that a difference is noticeable, but it's not enough in my opinion to justify moving to a "new generation".

I like to compare it with the jump from VHS to DVD. There, you not only got an enhancement in quality, but you also got a change in paradigms. Now you have instant access to any scene in the movie as well as commentaries, soundtracks, special features, etc. With Blu-ray, all you get is a new technology based on the same paradigm with enhanced quality that most people probably won't care much about.

Combine that with the fact that we're probably on the verge of yet another paradigm change anyway. I strongly assume that in not too many years, it will be possible to store whole movies in HD quality on flash memory with all the features that you know from DVDs, and the production cost will not be much higher than the production cost for DVDs. You'll get extremely small movie players then which don't contain any moving parts. So it won't be too long before all out favorite movies are going to be released in another format again. Sure, I understand that they want to move to HD now that the display technology is improving, but I don't see myself buying a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player anytime soon.

Have you ever seen "Bikini Destinations" on the HD channel? The grains of sand, the droplets of water, it's fantastic! :D
