Okay, let's say you were JJ Abrams and you had complete control over casting choices- so who would you cast as the young Kirk and Spock for the upcoming Trek 11 movie?
Remember that these are the two most iconic characters of Trek- Kirk is the dashing young space captain- smart and tough; while Spock is the half-human/Vulcan who is the administrator of cold logic.
Anybody?

Two unknowns. Spock's character should be from the same ethnic groups as Leonard Nimoy, so as to maintain a physical similarity. Kirk should be played by an Irish-American.
I just want to know if they'll include that guy from Kirk's Academy years who ran around yelling, "Fight me Jimmy! Fight me!"
:D

Well, it is really hard to come up with the name of an "unknown" for obvious reasons. With that in mind and the question "who" should play the roles of Kirk and Spock I have to go with people I've heard of.
Captain James T. Kirk: Bruce Willis or Russell Crowe
Commander Spock: Adrien Brody or Alan Rickman

I'm sorry, I wouldn't be able to see Alan Rickman as Spock without thinking of his role in "Galaxy Quest"--and giggling hopelessly throughout.
Btw, if this film is set during Kirk and Spock's earlier days, shouldn't the actors be younger? Probably in their mid-30s at the oldest?

I'm not clear on what is meant by "young" Kirk and Spock. I was imagining Shatner and Nimoy as they are now, so in that sense the actors I listed ARE young. I was trying to imagine actors who I think have some resemblence to Shatner and Nimoy, and are also talented. I can't imagine the Kirk and Spock characters working as such if the actors are too young.
I hear what you're saying about Rickman, but I wouldn't have the same problem since I'm familiar with him in various roles. I don't have an image of him as the Galaxy Quest character, Dr. Lazarus etched in my mind. Rickman is 15 years younger than Nimoy, and both Crowe and Willis are more than 20 years younger than Shatner. Also, Adrien Brody is 42 years younger than Nimoy.
I would try to find some currently unknown actors, too, but as I said, how can I list an "unknown" actor? I mean, they're UNKNOWN. I wanted to at least list some names.

Oh, I'm big fan of Alan Rickman, so his Galaxy Quest role is the last thing I picture when I picture him. (Rather, I see: #1) love-lorn Colonel Brandon in "Sense and Sensibility"; #2) grieving lover Jamie in "Truly Madly Deeply"; #3) sneering Snape in the Harry Potter flicks. I'd go see a flick with this guy reading the phone book, I love his voice so much. His Marvin voice was the best thing about "Hitchhikers Guide" last year.)
I'm just saying, once you've played a prominent role in a satire on Star Trek, it would be hard to forget that role if you were playing an actual role on a serious Star Trek type series. It would be as if after seeing Gene Wilder in "Young Frankenstein," he played the lead in a real horror flick, or seeing Mike Myers playing James Bond after doing Austin Powers. It's just too close to the older role.

I like Alan Rickman too. He was great as Hans Grubber<sp> in Die Hard. I liked him in Galaxy Quest too. I agree that the part would be too similar if he played Spock. And yes he is too old for the part of a young Spock. If they choose him (Rickman) they might as well use Nimoy for the part instead.
Spock is MUCH older than Kirk, and has a much longer life span. So, when you say "young" Spock, you can't mean that in the human sense. I'm not saying I believe Alan Rickman is the perfect choice, but your argument about his age doesn't hold up to me as an excuse to disqualify him.
However, I believe I have the solution: CGI
Create a younger Kirk and Spock who are CGI versions of younger Shatner and Nimoy. End of problem.

Actually I do know that Vulcans age differently than humans... In a former life I use to be a big Star Trek geek... Anyways, I think it would be fun to see someone fresh in the role of Spock. I just hope they don't make Vulcan's something other than what they were in TOS and TNG. I didn't like what they did to Vulcans in ENT (what little I watched it).
I stand corrected. I checked with Star Trek.com and according to the bios for Kirk and Spock, they were born only 3 years apart, in 2233 and 2230 respectively. That means we do need to have actors of the same age to be more relevant.

Wait, wait . . . I've got it . . . coming . . . now . . .
Captain James Tiberius Kirk: Larry the Cable Guy!
First Officer, Mr. Spock of Vulcan: Michael Richards!
Oh what hilarity would ensue . . . :jump2:

So what we are saying is that it will be hard to cast a new Kirk or Spock, right?
I'm saying maybe the way to go is Star Trek as a sitcom. I mean, that's reinventing things, right?

I like stirring the pot. People need to think outside of their boxes once in a while. Fresh perspective and all that.

You want outside the box? OK...
My choices:
James T. Kirk - Rick Berman
Mr. Spock- Brannon Braga
"Science fiction is dead... and the Matrix Reloaded will make a lot of money!"

Why not? I think Berman would lend a noble air and be able to play Kirk very well: cold and tough, just like the old William Shatner style; after all, he is a walking Trek encyclopedia and Braga is quite the intellectual type who would look good with pointy ears, sort of like a beatnik-type Vulcan.
