It won't appear at the beginning. And it will be an integral part of the pre-title sequence. As Bond makes his second kill, he will be viewed from p.o.v. of the person he is hunted, then down their gun barrel. Bond will walk into shot, hear / see them then turn and shoot. I am hoping they don't wimp out on us and the red wash is caused by a headshot then a dead slump over the breach. It then segues into the main titles.

I heard about thiis yesterday from a friend.
A few thoughts....
One possibiity... It's just a rumor.
If it's not, it sounds REALLY corny. Things like this scare the hell out of me. By now, everyone has probably heard my criticisms of what I can now call the "Last Crusade" factor. Showing us all of Bond's "origins" will just get cheezy. And if this is true, that they are trying to create an "origin" from something which is simply a graphic element... makes no sense. What next...Bond stumbles into a retro dance clubs where girls are dancing around sillouetted by the pink, prange and lime green lights to a Shirley Bassey song??

Well, when asked if he had filmed a new gunbarrel opening, Craig did say something like "Kind of.... yes, but not really. I can't say anymore."
As long as it is done properly and the cheese factor is purposely turned all the way down, with the vis. effects done properly and carefully, then it might be OK.
I will just be sad if they have a great script, a great actor....... and then ruin it through this type of thing.

I try to avoid "spoilers" but I heard there may not be a gun barrel so I wanted to see what was said here.
I don't like it. I know this is the beginnings of Bond but it is still a Bond movie. You gotta begin with the gun barrel. It is iconic. The revision just sounds too "cute".
Other non-Bond aspects of Casino Royale rumors I heard: Minor Spoiler

The Bond theme will not be used in the movie until the end, and then it will be the true old school Bond riff.
I don't have a problem with that. As a matter of fact, I think the film makers have a great opportunity at the end to introduce the Bond we all know by recreating his intro from Dr. No.
After the story has wrapped up have Bond in a casino, in a tux, at a table, lighting up a cigarette and giving us the "Bond. James Bond." ...cue music, end of film. I think it would be clever to do a shot by shot re-enactment of that Dr. No intro with Craig.

Well, it then begs the question... if it's supposed to be the very first gunbarrel, will Bond be wearing a hat?

Seriously? I don't think so. It's not a period piece.

Or will he played by Bob Simmons ?
Either way, this is going to be really interesting and I am looking forward to it immensely as it's different, and change is good as far as I am concerned.
I just hope that audiences are ready for it, because if this bombs we will be Bond-less for a decade or so I reckon.

ROTFLMAO!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
As to the gunbarrel idea.... I dunno. I like the traditional aspect - opening gunbarrel & theme. To me - THAT IS a James Bond Film opening - accept no substitutes.

Ive just watched the trailer and I think you can see the gunbarrel sequence your talking about in it, (I could be wrong). But Bond is in what i think looks like a toilet and he spins round and shoots. Although it does look quite cool, I agree with most people who say that the gunbarrel sequence should be at the beginning, thats what says ur seeing a bond film!! But I wont judge untill Ive seen it, at least it will be there in some form i suppose.
