A debate has arisen here at my place of employment. God forbid we actually do 8 straight hours of work.

Natalie may be able to answer this but I call on all real born and bred NASCAR fans.

Here's the thing.
Is Days of Thunder consdered a joke amongst the ranks?

Kind of like how firefighters hated Backdraft.

I have been to about Five nascar events in the past few years. And I would have to that say that for the fan it is not. Ever time I go play golf and hit another golf cart, with my cart, I always yell " rubbins racin".

I would have to agree with Gilbert.
While I am not the biggest NASCAR fan,
my wife is. And she's quick to refer to that movie
from time to time as a fan.

And if you're really a fan of NASCAR, you'll know by now
what Dale Jr. is doing special just for this coming race
at Talladega. Kind of heart tugging the more you think about it too.

How do NASCAR fans count?

1, 2, Dale...

Most of the NASCAR fans that I know (myself included) have high praise for the movie because while there's a little "Hyuck! Gawrsh, ah'm a redneck!" in the movie, they also got a LOT of stuff right, like drafting and pit stop scenes (I used to be a Pit Crew member for the #43 car a few years back...) and I love the fact that the camera car that they had was also a race car. Over 70 cameras, speeds while filming in excess of 150mph...man, it was a rush and still is, but my favourite scene doesn't involve the track.

Say it with me DoT fans: BEACH SCENE!
Trickle: Too close to call?
Rowdy: Yup.

(I used to be a Pit Crew member for the #43 car a few years back...)

You were a pit crew member? How cool was that!?
Who was the driver/main sponsor for car #43 back then?
I recall Cheerios being among them for that number.
Wasn't one of Petty's kids the driver? Or was it Labonte?

STP was still the sponsor, it was #43 and the driver I was crewing for was Walter Koller, a journeyman F1600 and Formula Ford driver. :D

My parents actually visited Dale Sr. at his ranch/workshop a month or so before he died. My dad worked on the Corvette LeMans-class car, and when they took it to the 24 hours of Daytona race, Dale Sr. was one of the drivers. I think Dale Jr. drove the Corvette at a later 24-hour race, so they've met him too. Good drivers and nice, classy people.

Well, I couldn't let this go by without comment!

I can tell you that from a technical standpoint, there was a lot right but a lot that was off the wall and just BS and made up. It also had a lot of stuff that was just cheesy and it is regarded as such by many. Some traditionalists just out right hate it!

I correspond with a few writers for NASCAR.com and there are frequent jokes in reference to it.

There are a couple of movies that are much more highly thought of in terms of accuracy and staying true to the sport, fans, and the industry.

My favorite movie related to stock car racing is easily "Thunder Road" with Robert Mitchum. They are never on a track in the movie, but if you know the history of the sport, this movie gives you the real deal on where it came from.

"3" was a good recent movie although not completely factually correct.

I love the movie with Kenny Rogers and his awesome hair, "Six Pack" but it doesn't even try to be accurate.

Can't forget "Stroker Ace" as a cool take on it and anything with Burt Reynolds in the 70's and 80's is awesome.

There are others I can't remember right now.

Days of Thunder may be a joke among the NASCAR drivers, but it's still a fun watch.

....Oh, yeah, I'm back.

Now that I think about it Stroker Ace is a better NASCAR movie, who doesn't love Burt in a chicken outfit racing

Jesus...Spike is here. Welcome back, sexy.

And...I'm not anything more than a casual (I'll read the paper on Monday to see who won on Sunday) race fan, and haven't seen Days of Thunder yet.

Though I was once more than a casual fan, and followed it pretty hard for a few years there. It became a thing to bicker with my dad, since he loved Earnhart and I loved Jeff Gordon. Oh, the bonding. *beams*

That said, is it okay that I find it strange that people still aren't over the loss of Dale Earnhart Sr.? Or that he was mourned so hard, and so long, to begin with?

Maybe I just don't understand...and maybe I'm hijacking a thread.
So I'll stop now. :D

That is one FINE moustache....only Jason Lee and/or Burt Reynolds could stand up to it.
