Y the Last Man is an excellent Vertigo comics series. I've been reading it since issue 1 and it's become quite a hit. Author Brian K Vaughn has become quite a star too. Now it's being talked about in Hollwyood. Sadly, it's by one of my least favorite actors right now.

Geez. Isn't it bad enough this kid was in those terrible adaptations Constantine, I,Robot and Transformers?

Jakerman 04-27-2007 09:49 AM

Yeah, and now he's gonna be in Indy 4.

I've never read Y though, so wouldn't know if he'd be good in it or not.

I could somewhat see him in the part... but at the same time I can't stand the kid. He just seems so full of Hollywood BS in every interview I see. He talks about Constantine as if it was a good adaptation. It had Keanu Reeves playing a role set in LA that was originally a blonde snarky British guy in England. Then there was I,Robot and now Transformers. All BS Hollywood movies.

Sure, for typical Hollywood movies, they're good films. Yet looking at the source or the fans, they're not good at all. Sure, Transformers was a 80s kids cartoon, but its fans wanted something reconizable. Instead we got Bay and LeBouf modernizing it and 'turning it up a notch', meanwhile they both toss digs at fans and the old show we liked. Of course then they play CYA and say they didn't mean to call it amateur, they ment the animation in relation to the CGI in the movie. Yeah. These guys are full of total Hollywood BS.

And now we have him cast in Indy 4. I can only imagine the crap that could turn into. We saw how crappy the Star Wars prequels turned into. Then again, I don't see Lucas going hog wild with CGI on an Indy film. Plus I doubt he'll be writing and directing it. Still, there are a number of ways it could go wrong.

Am I jaded? Am I too cynical? Then again, after all these crappy adapations, how can a fan not be?

Anyway, I hope Y the Last Man gets better treatment than any of those. Far from an indie comic, but it still has quite a good and creative story to it. (Vertigo is published by DC AOL Time Warner Comics after all. Marvel is more of an indie published relative to DC/Vertigo.)

Personally, I think Y makes a much better TV show than a movie. Think something like Jericho, a show about survivors after a disaster. Though it seems the higherups at DC AOL Time Warner have shopped it as a movie. Then again, these are the same idiots hell bent on putting Watchmen in thearters as a one shot than releasing it as a cable mini-series or even a series of films.

And as the offers keep pouring in, I'm sure he's losing sleep over that.

Shia Labeouf is one of the best young actors working today. He was great in Bobby and Suburbia and was absolutely amazing in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. He has a range you would not expect if you had only seen him in large action movies. Are you too jaded and cynical? Um, yes! When you start going off on a movie that hasn't even started filming yet for how it could maybe, possibly, theoretically go wrong in the future, I think it's going a little too far.

And I'm going to guess that Shia didn't really have anything to do with how faithful any of his movies are to their source material....

The Xenos 04-29-2007 07:59 PM

True. I forget about ones like Bobby or A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, which I hear nothing but good things about.

Still, I'm basing my judgement on these crappy movies he's done. Yes, it's not his fault I,Robot or Constantine sucked. At the same time I keep reading interviews with him and he keeps praising them as such wonderful films. THAT is what ticks me off. That is what has gotten me to dislike him. I'm just looking at his commentary on these films and scratching my head at how full of it he seems to be.

Sure he has shown good acting chops in some good films, but at the same time he sounds like a Hollywood BS artist with these more questionable quality films.

It’s entirely possible that he’s being sincere about those films. After all, they are the ones that allowed him to get his foot in the door in regards to the movie industry, so it’s entirely possible that they may occupy a special place in his heart. Besides, I personally thought Constantine was a great film and I have no problem saying that publicly. Since I’m not a fan of the source material I was able to enjoy the film for what it was, a fresh take on the whole supernatural detective subgenre. In some ways it reminded me of a tamer, more commercial Angel Heart, which is also a personal favourite of mine. I Robot, on the other hand, I didn’t enjoy anywhere near as much but I certainly wouldn’t look down upon someone who did.

All actors, by the very nature of their profession, are ‘full of it’. They make their living pretending to be other people. However, Shia comes across to me during interviews as being an endearing young man, seemingly free of the egocentric airs that characterize the typical Hollywood star. I suppose you could turn this logic around and say he’s portraying a deliberate image, seeing as how he is an actor and all. However, perception is reality, and so far I haven’t seen him do or say anything that would lead me to suspect he’s a total dirtbag in person.
