I certainly agree with everything you just said. The bottom line is, and has always been, the strength of character within individuals. If the student cared more, if the teacher cared more, if, if, if . . . .
Perhaps a lot of the blame for the failures in our educational system really and truly should be lain at the feet of the parents. It is up to the parents to instill in their child some sense of responsibility to themselves and others. Unfortunately, there seems to be simply not enough dedicated and thoughtful teachers within our system to help give all kids the attention they deserve. We call ourselves a society based on freedom, which implies that the needs of the individual are paramount, yet we've abandoned that ideal and concept in order to "serve the masses as if all were the same." That is the great mistake of history, and it continues to repeat itself.
