--I just recently finished reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray."
I've been a fan of Oscar Wilde's work for some time (my favorite play is "The Importance of Being Earnest"), however I had never gotten around to reading Dorian Gray, his only full-length novel. I was somewhat intrigued by the character in the film bastardization of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," so i wanted to see how close the character was to the one on the page. Over-all I thought it was an excellent book. In a way, the character almost reminded me of the character of Patrick Bateman in "American Psycho (the movie, not the book. I've never read it, so I don't know how closely they adapted it.) By that, I mean how driven the character was by material posessions. It was a fascinating story and it was written with an aire of sensuality that permeated every page. There were a few points where I wished Wilde would get back to the story after these long, extended passages about art and tapestries. Not because they were boring, but rather because the story was so engaging. I highly recommend the book. It's not long, but it's definitely not a light read. |
