Friends, I was very disappointed last night with the digitally reworked broadcast of "City on the Edge of Forever". It's the episode about time travel back to the 1930's guest starring Joan Collins.
In the original version, Doctor McCoy encounters a street bum who steals his phaser and accidentally kills himself. The accidental death scene has been editited out of the new digital version. If you have the yellow season one DVD disk set you can still see the original scene. I'm not upset with Paramount remaking the special effects scenes, but there's no reason to cut out an accidental death from the story. It's the same damned editorial non-sense they've applied to classic cartoons on TV. |

Wow. That's pretty lame. Seems Star Trek now has its own case of Geedo shoots first. Damn.
Now with this digital rerelease, when it comes to DVD, will the original version of the shows also be availible in the same package? I've heard reports both ways. |

It's hard to guess what will and what will not be on future DVD releases. Viacom/Paramount/CBS/Nickelodeon has a poor track history when it comes to offering censored material on video. Their Ren and Stimpy videos are the most glaring examples. Their editing is done with "stone knives and bear skins" to quote the episode.
Here's a page link you can click on if any of you wish to contact Paramount or Viacom about the matter. http://www.viacom.com/contactus.jhtml;jsessionid=BVLIDAZDFL11ECQBAFLA4CY If any of you contact Paramount or Viacom, please be polite, and don't use any words you would be ashamed to say to your grandmother. |

I've been having a hard time finding when and where these new ditigtal remasterd episodes are airing. Any chance of a link that I can go to to get this information?

Paul, since you listed San Antonio as your location, you can see the Star Trek episode in question in a few hours on KABB Fox channel 29, at 2AM Monday morning your time.
In other parts of the country it appears on NBC stations instead of the FOX network. |

You know what, I was actually watching some of that episode on Monday at 2 AM! (My youngest son decided to get up and my wife and I couldn't get him back to sleep, babies go figure! ) Anyway, come to think of it, I belive that I saw the Horta episode at another time of night, but I really didn't see how either it or the "City on the Edge of Forever" were digtally remastered. The Enterpise looked better, but I really couldn't tell how these episodes were any different. I guess that's just because I really haven't seen TOS in a long time to really be able to tell the difference. I'll have to try to catch an entire episode some night to really see what's new. 8) |

There aren't a lot of differences apart from the scenes showing external shots of the ships, the main view screen monitor on the bridge, and death scene edits.
There is one slight change I noticed that's an improvement. On original film prints of the first season, DeForest Kelly wasn't listed with Shatner and Nimoy in the opening credits. In the new digital versions, DeForest's name has been added as it was for the original second and third season prints. |

I don't understand. Why would they take that out? Is that really something that's going to be troublesome to watch as a Star Trek fan? Not to mention it's a perfect example of a "time travel is bad, mmm'k" moment.
I'm getting so tired of classic shows being sliced and diced. It's just getting ridiculous. Record everything you can, kids. You never know how it might end it when you get it back. |

To be honest, I don't understand why they would do anything more than just remaster the film and sound of the original anyway. As for this specific incident, unless less it was a mistatke that was never fixed in the original release, I don't see why they would sensor such a scene.
