Default The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

So this morning i had the opportunity to see The Mummy Tomb of the... oh shit lets just call it Mummy 3...
and what did I think? its good...really good, The trailer doesnt give too much away (unlike Hellboy 2, which pretty much showed ALL the eye candy bits)

SPOILER
There is definitly one bit thats borrowed liberally and literally from Indiana Jones Last Crusade though that i immediatly recognized as being pulled from another movie, and truth be told there may have been more bits borrowed from other movies but they werent as obvious as the borrowed bits from Resident Evil 3

...and Yeti's are really frakkin cool.

One thing to compare between this and Hellboy 2, Jet Li actually DOES raise his army of the undead, and Michelle Yeoh actually DOES raise her army of the undead and theres an epic fight between the two warring sides... unlike in Hellboy 2 where "it was so close, they ALMOST activated the Golden Army, then they activated them then oops, then the blink and you'll miss it - ah darn, they shut them off then the movie was done and the credits roll...no, the Mummy3 doesnt cheat the audience by having them wait the full 1 hour and 55 minutes for these two armies to square off then finally poof delivering a blink and you'll miss it ending, oh no... theres LOTS of undead fighting, lots of Yeti's, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Bredan Fraiser, lots of undead period, lots of screentime with Jet Li, lots of funny bits but balenced out well with the on screen action... just when you want to say "this movie really does have EVERYTHING... they find some way to pack even MORE cool stuff into it.

After watching Indy 4, the Mummy 3 is just a much better ride, a better bang for your buck and its every bit as good (but in a different way) as BATMAN TDK Am I nuts? No I'm definitly not nuts. Am I a huge fan of Batman TDK? Yessir... does this film deliever? YOU BET!

The Mummy 3 is really what we were all expecting from Indiana Jones 4 ..it delivers without elluding to the fact that Rick O'Connell grew up and had a kid that went to College to become an archialogist like his father, Rick is not a 67 year old playing a role where he's TOTALLY unconvincingly indestructable, no... Rick is back in the game and the shots hurt, the bruises are real and everybody is really trying to kill him... for real...unlike the crusty old Indiana Jones who can seemingly skate through a Nuclear bomb blast at GROUND ZERO from within a refridgerator....just as long as its lead lined of course... right? Sorry Indy gets no love here.

How does this film stack up against Forbidden Kingdom, Jet Li's last action adventure... The Mummy 3 is a much much much better movie on so many different levels and really delivers the goods..come to think of it, the last time Jet Li was a badguy in a movie was Lethal Weapon 4 but his Emperor Han is so much better than his forgettable Wah Sing Ku character.

THIS FILM KICKS ASS!...and Yeti's are just plain cool.

I thought it was pretty good. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, it really could have gone either way. I was worried that they were departing from the Egyptian setting, I was worried that Maria Bello wouldn't be a good replacement for Rachel Weis, and I was just worried that by the third film in the series it would've gone even further downhill than The Mummy Returns did (which I thought was still a lot of fun, by the way.).

Overall, it was pretty much what I expected it to be. It was fun, it was action-packed (I was surprised that they didn't shy away from killing people or the use of gun-play. A lot of gun-play), it's a great mindless end-of-the summer rollercoaster ride. Of course it has its problems. A lot of the dialogue is kind of hokey, Luke Ford as the son was kind of back-and-forth as for likability, and every once in a while the pace is a tad stilted (mainly with the long opening backstory). Maria Bello wasn't worse or better than Rachel Weisz, she was just different. She's a lot tougher and more action-oriented, which was nice, but I kind of missed Rachel Weisz's softer side. It's pretty nice that they even allude to the fact that she's a different person (but still the same character) than before. Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li were good in their respective roles, even if they didn't get much actual face-time in the middle part of the film. I'd recommend seeing it if you're looking for something fun to do on a lazy afternoon/evening with some friends. Honestly, I wouldn't be adverse to a fourth film, but only if the principles returned.

Oh, and the yetis were indeed cool. And I have to say Brendan Fraser looks pretty damn good with his shirt off!

I missed that... in fact, I'd forgotten about Rachel Weisz being switched out for Maria Bello...i was so sold on her performance, the actress change thing totally didnt bother me.

as for Egyptian theme... the bar is named IMHOTEP and has a Egyptian theme, I liked that, i liked the banter between Rick and Alex about which guns are better (LOL!!)
Michelle Yeoh comes in the middle of the film and you're right she goes just as quick. Still, I gott love her, she's been such a good actress in the Supercop 2 movie (taking over without Jackie Chan) and in Tomorrow Never dies she kicked ass also, there was some speculation as to whether or not she'd be given her own spin off film usng her 007 character.

I liked it. I liked the first two Mummy movies better, but this one was still a lot of fun.

Maria Bello was fine, but I really missed Rachel Weisz in the role. She brought a whole lot more personality and fun to it.

On a brighter note, John Hannah (Johnathan in the movie) pretty much steals every scene in this movie. He was just as goofy and hilarious as he was in the previous two movies.

Yeah, it's at her book signing (for her novels The Mummy and The Mummy Returns no less!) where you first meet her. A fan asks if the character is based on her, and she responds that she can honestly say that she's a completely different person!

I forgot about the bar being named Imhotep, although I did notice all the dancers were painted gold like Imhotep's love back in ancient Egypt. Lots of nice little nods to the first two films.

now see, THATS a great way to end a movie... not a stinger, not a cliffhanger... just THAT.
