Default Ridley Scott Directing Alien Prequel

From Mania:

It's officially a "go" for 20th Century Fox and director Ridley Scott. Thirty years after Alien arrived in theaters, the director is returning to helm a prequel, confirms Variety. After pitching a story to Fox and Scott Free prods., hot new screenwriter Jon Spaihts has been hired to write the script treatment.

While his writing resume is void of released films, Spaihts has become a go-to-guy for space thrillers lately. After Keanu Reeves became attached to his Warner Bros. sci-fi script Shadow 19, Reeves hired Spaihts to write the space journey epic Passengers, which is berthed at Morgan Creek. That script got Spaihts the meeting with Fox and Scott Free, and he won the job with an Alien reboot take that the studio and Scott loved.

The film is set up to be a prequel to the groundbreaking 1979 film that Scott directed. It will precede that film, in which the crew of a commercial towing ship returning to Earth is awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. The crew discovers too late that the signal generated by an empty ship was meant to warn them.

The deal gives Fox another chance to keep their franchise alive. There were three sequels to Scott's original, but it is the first time the director has set his mind on directing one.

Ridley Scott back in space? Time for you to sound off.

I'll be there, man.

Though technically we've already had two prequels, for what it's worth.

I am happy that Scott is coming back to direct another Alien movie but at the same time I am still hesitant about a prequal.

One of the many, many things I enjoyed about Alien was the fact that we did NOT know where the Aliens came from or wtf was up with the driver of the ship. I always liked that I had to figure that out for myself becasue the possiblities were endless....

I don't care what Kaeos says, the Alien ship was NOT headed toward Earth or anything like that. I believe it crashed landed and how it went about doing that is a mystery, which I enjoy.

I just hope Scott does not completely answer every question that he left open for us in the first one....

I also think that's the problem with Hollywood lately. They're looking to take classics that left some mysteries to the audience and explain it all away.

One of the reasons I love Carpenter's The Thing was that he left a lot of the details up to the audience's imagination. When Windows dropped the keys, who picked them up? Who let the Doc escape from the shack? Was MacReady really copied by the creature? What about Childs?

Quite a few movies from the 80s could be described as "simpler" straight up stories and it's just one of the things I loved about it. They didn't need to explain every freaking detail.

That said...Like you and Space, I am happy that Ridley Scott is not only jumping back into the Alien franchise but that he's also coming back into the sci-fi genre as a whole. I've missed him on that score.

Just wished somewhat that Fox would grow some balls and take the Alien franchise into a whole new landscape. Make a sequel (Scott-like thriller, not action film) in the series that doesn't revolve around pre-existing characters.

Have no mention of Ripley or the old franchise. Set it a few years later and take it it into a new direction. They have this bad ass mythology and they keep retreading the same old ground. Be ambitious, damn it!

ok, this is a touchy subject for me, cause i LOVE, AND I MEAN LOVE the Alien movies, and predator ones. I love the comics, books, games, anything i love them. AvP 1 &2 were let downs, not HORRIBLE, but pretty damn week, the first more then the second. But i gave them some love just so i could see these two icons of my childhood beat the shit outta each other. So this news is great, and im happy..but i just want the background in the comics, books, and video games, to come into a movie form!! why did these movies have to take place on earth????? why wasn't it the future, AS EVERY DAMN BOOK, COMIC AND GAME SHOWS!!...........omg....sorry it still bugs me. But i have to agree that i wish they would move this sorry forward, and in a new direction, not back again....sigh.......
