Unlike many, I am not always against remakes, reboots, or what ever the industry may be labeling the recycling of old stories. That said, I don't think Tarzan warrants a return to the silver screen.
I have an idea for Hollywood producers, start looking to the young writers with ORIGINAL screenplays and concepts. Stop doing what is safe and give us something we have not seen before. |

I hasten to add that a Tarzan movie that has nothing to do with the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs can hardly be considered a Tarzan movie at all.
Just sayin'... |

TARZAN SHOULD be put back on the silver screen, but ONLY if faithful to the original works. Tarzan has never really been done right, it needs to be visceral and down right brutal.
Please God, keep Sommers away from this! |

That is my concern...I fear any movie adaptation will take away what was so raw and primordial about the original story.

Keep Tarzan On the Shelf. There is NO Modern Day actor that can bring the presence of Lord Greystoke to the screen. It can't be done without an Actor that brings Serious PRESENCE. I'm talking When Tarzan is in the room, "No words necessary, YOU JUST KNOW just he's there" type Presence. Again No Modern Day actor brings that aura with him.
Any suggestions on who MIGHT be a fair casting choice? |

The very discussion of "the right actor" with "presence" underscores the fundamental flaw with bringing such an inappropriate character back to the screen. By contemplating a remake of Tarzan, Hollywood is affirming that we modern audiences are willfully ignorant, or worse, actually comforted by the old school notion of an adopted westerner being imbued with God-given superiority to lord over ?the natives?.
Anybody notice how ludicrous it is that The Bride was the best martial artist in all of Japan in "Kill Bill"? (Ditto "Last Samurai?, "Dances w/ Wolves", and too many other movies to list). Is the "Manifest Destiny" worldview still acceptable? OK, back in the days of Edgar Rice Burroughs that was the norm, but 100 years later, do we remain OK with natives bowing and quaking in the awe inspiring presence of the great Kemosabe? Are indigenous peoples are still not considered self-reliant or important enough to warrant film presence unless they are relegated to sidekick or background status, viewed only through the lens of the western protagonist? |
