This discussion is for comments about the news article News: Will to power 'Captain America'?.

yeah, don't see it happening.Times may have changed, but doesn't it take place during WW2? Weren't there still a ton of predujices is military units? I doubt there was any Blacks in the higher episolon of the military at the time.

Maybe he's not Steve Rodgers, but the first Cap, Isaiah Bradley, who would probably be Steve's mentor...

But then again, it would be very cool to have Rodgers as an African American, if nothing more than to be the reason Nick Fury joined the military in the first place...
And maybe if the WW2 propaganda portrayed him as a white guy, it could be a nice counterpoint, he wears a mask and only appears in the heat of battle, a hero, yet back home he is a second class citizen...
And how much of a surprise would it be to Tony Stark, this could work and might be a nice way of discussing racism both today and in the 1940s...

Not that Stark is a racist, of course, but it's just the surprise factor, would be pretty cool

When I first heard this news yesterday, I thought to myself "no way", but the more I think about it now, why the hell not? He's proven himself as a great actor; he can do this. As long as Marvel stays true to the source material, I see no reason that Stever Rogers has to be a blonde haired, blue eyed, white guy.

Right, but Steve Rogers wasn't in the higher echelon of the military either. He was deemed unfit to serve and had to subject himself to a dangerous experiment to get his foot in the door.

Maybe next we can have a Luke Cage movie starring Batista from the WWE. He's got the build, right? Who cares if he is not the original character's race? Or maybe Wonder Woman starring Brad Pitt. Why should we be stuck in stereotpes? He's pretty enough isn't he?
Political Correctness gone crazy makes for poor casting choices. Anyone remember the last time they tried this? Will Smith cast in the role of a traditionally white character? Wild Wild West? Don't feel bad. No one wants to remember that fiasco. I am all for great minority characters, but not forcing them on the fans by dramatically changing established characters. Simply put what is needed is the creation of more good minority characters! Rather than re-imagine existing characters, this should be a challenge to talented creators to step up and create some outstanding heroes that are as iconic as those currently in vogue.That would be legitimate and encouraging. This type of stunt implies that there is no one out there able to create minority characters of the caliber of the older, established heroes and I don't believe this is true. It's cheap, lazy, insulting on many levels and ultimately not a good idea.
