Post On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Jack Kerouac, who died in 1969 at the age of 47, may have eventually been done in by his own creation. He turned to alcohol, in part to deal with the stresses of fame, and never recovered. Part of that fame was predicated on the notion that he was solely an antiestablishment writer, says Brinkley, who thinks this idea does a disservice to Kerouac's message.

"If you read On the Road, it's a valentine to the United States," he says. "All this is pure poetry for almost a boy's love for his country that's just gushing in its adjectives and descriptions. You know, Kerouac used to say, 'Anybody can make Paris holy, but I can make Topeka holy.'"

Thumbs up Dark Rain - Amazing

Has anyone out there read Dark Rain (Conor Corderoy ISBN0-230-000010-X). This is an amazing book and should so be a film. It's a very dark vision of the near future. It kind of recalls Bladerunner and Soilent Green, but it's different too. And long after you've finished it it still kind of haunts your head. I read it in one night.

There's some rumour about a code hidden in the text.

Good, good book.

Default Making The Best Of It

I'd like to point you in the direction of a wonderful book just written by my aunt...Making The Best Of It.

Fascinating memories of a working girl’s life, as she recalls her childhood days, and the humble beginnings of both her parents and of her grandparents.
Recollecting the streets of Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, and it's inhabitants, as they coped with two world wars, and the friendly ‘invasion’ of the 'yanks'.
The early arrivals of electricity and valve radio to her town and the impact they had on her father's ambitions.
Local dance halls, and music, from Twenties jazz, and the Forties Big Band era, to the Swinging Sixties and Seventies.
Fascinating anecdotes of factory life, from the boot and shoe industry, and engineering.
Descriptions of Kettering's own entrepeneurs, including Charles Wicksteed, creator of Kettering's famous Wicksteed Park.

The remarkable life story of her father, Cyril Charles Dobson, inventor, and owner of the Cytringan Electric Welder Company, who built a 30’ long steel sea going boat in his back garden.

The rock and roll era, and the part played by derek tompkins, owner of beck studios, which CULMINATed IN A TRIP TO LOS ANGELES And A reception at the hollywood hilton as a special guest of top American producer, songwriter and musician David Foster.
And finally, The tragic sequence of events that led to the sad loss of her father and sister-in-law, within the space of just one week.

Default Rouge Angel

Has anyone read this book? I have really enjoyed reading it. It is about the founder of Angel Tree, Mary Kay Beard. It talks about her transformation from little girl, member of the FBI'S Ten Most Wanted List, to prisoner helper through Angel Tree. Post on here about the book, the organization, or any interaction who have had with Mary Kay Beard. It is an interesting story and a MUST READ.

Default American Retaliation

Hi there new here but wanted to tell you about a fictional war novel I just finished reading last week.
Title "American Retaliation" by Michael Lynch.
I thought it was a great book, it was not too long or too short just right. The author had me constantly on the edge waiting to see what was going to happen next through out the entire book.

A little interesting fact: today North Korea detonated a nuclear bomb and in this novel Michael Lynch named Noth Korea as one of the contries to attack America.

Any way thats what I just read hope someone else enjoys it as much as I did it is a great sniper story.
Jack

Thats the authors blog.... Later
