Default Free Speech in Britain takes a dive...

Protests over religious hate plan

The land that gave us the Magna Carta, Shakespeare and Monty Python is now rushing headlong towards sensitivity totalitarianism. This is just sad.

You know you're in serious doo-doo when Mr. Bean becomes the voice of reason...

Quote:
Blackadder star Rowan Atkinson said the changes proposed by peers had been made meaningless in the government's compromise offer.

"My problem with this bill, and remains the problem, is its potential to provide immunity from criticism and ridicule of religious belief," he said.

Mr Atkinson, who also starred as Mr Bean, added: "You cannot draft a piece of legislation with the intention of just picking off a few nasty people because the very nature of law is that it applies to us all."

I just wish Atkinson had shown such judgement before signing on to make Johnny English...

The Bill was defeated in the vote in Parliament last night. Thank f**k for that ! Totalitarian is right. Blair and his cronies are trying to micro manage every aspect of life in Britain whilst many other things run out of all control. And never forget that when Blair and his ilk were at Uni their poster-boys where the guys on the other side of the iron curtain, with their secret police and their "dissappearing" of dissenters.

If in doubt, legislate !!! And the police ? Jesus. Whilst we have some shopkeeper dragged to death under his own car that was being stolen, those happy slappers kicking a guy to death on the South Bank and that guy knifed at the tube station (not to mention the 11 year old heroin addict) what are they doing ?

Prosecuting some bloke for giving the finger to a speed camera (he wasn't speeding) and pursuing a ridiculous drugs rap against Kate Moss.

8 years of abject failure for Britain, and everyone has to pay for it through the burgeoning civil service of New Labour creating their client state.

This was Blair's "Third Way?" Britain needs another Thatcher, imo. We've been going in the same direction here in Canada for some time, hopefully a new government with some fresh ideas will address some of that. Or not.

Still, I learned a long time ago it takes more than an election victory to change a country. People need to have the guts to speak out on any topic, for any reason, regardless of who it may offend.

Funny how in Britain at least, the Clockwork Orangefuture seems to have taken shape, with overtones of 1984.

I would have preferred to have lived in the world predicted by 2001, instead, personally. :green:
