Not that I care much for the BMI, but 163 pounds is simply my "feel good" weight, the weight at which I feel the most healthy.

And don't diet. Just cut 100 calories a day. It may not drop the weight as fast as you'd like, but it's the safe way, and it's not hard to do forever.
I lost 50 pounds before, so believe me, I know how to lose weight, and I know how to keep it off.

Kah, I thought you gave good advice. I would have just said thank you for the advice.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be snappish.

It's just that whenever you say that you're trying to lose weight, all of a sudden everyone gives you good advice (it's probably the same for people who try to quit smoking). It usually didn't even bother me (nothing wrong with good advice!), but I have this really really annoying colleague - the kind of woman who will answer questions that you direct at other people, etc. I always thought that I am the greatest smartass on the planet, but she could outsmartass me in her sleep. A while ago, I mentioned to her that I will try to lose weight, so she asked me how I planned to do that, and when I explained my diet to her, she flat-out told me that it's not possible to lose weight like that. That's when I told her "Oh, ok. I lost 50 pounds like that before." and that was the first time ever that I managed to shut her up. So now that has sort of become my standard answer.

And let's say you don't fail. How long do you think it'll take to go right back to where you started? I would bet within the year, you will be talking about making the same New Year's resolution for 2008.
Well, therein lies the problem, doesn't it? If you're not willing to change your mindset and OWN what you want, nothing you do will help or be permanent if it does.

If one is not willing to exercise, cut the amount they eat or alter what they eat, my only advice is this: feel guilty about what your pleasure center wants you to eat BEFORE you do it, NOT AFTER. Going on that basis, I think you could lose 15 pounds in about 8 weeks without even trying.

Otherwise, the only real way is to put your nose to the grindstone. There is no magic bullet (or pill) for your health.

I am going to say this in the nicest way possible. If you people (those of you with weight issues) knew what you were doing, you wouldn't need to lose weight and completely overhaul your lifestyle. Right? Ideally, if you were doing things right as far as health and exercise go, you shouldn't need to lose 25 or 50 or 100 pounds. Now, if the issue is mental, well that's just different, and needs to be solved psychologically before being solved physically. I am not trying to be an ass, and I understand where you are coming from as far as the unwanted advice situation, (Hello, I bartended 5 nights a week throughout my pregnancy) so I will not offer advice again unless asked. Which, considering the reaction I am likely to get with my opinions, will not be anytime in the near future.

There are also physiological issues, Kah. I've known people who couldn't lose weight no matter what they did. Turns out they've got thyroid problems, and although taking medication helps, it's still difficult to lose weight because their metabolism is out of whack. Strangely enough, getting pregnant caused them to lose weight, as it kicked their metabolism into gear and working properly. I think they ended pregnancy with a net weight loss.

Well, yes, but I am talking about these people in specific who gain and lose weight like it's fun. "I lost 50 lbs before. I can do it again." Why would you want to? Maybe those diets and exercise routines work to lose a bunch of weight quickly, but it doesn't change all their bad habits. Why even bother losing the weight if you are just going to do it again in a couple of years? I'll never understand why people aren't willing to sacrifice a few things permanently to save their own lives, and instead make themselves miserable for months or years (like my mother- diet after diet for all of my life), lose the weight they want to lose, and then go right back to living the way they did before the diet.

I may have a genetic propensity towards being thin, but I don't stay that way on accident. I am not saying there aren't people out there who can't help being overweight. I'm not even saying there is anything wrong with being overweight. What I am saying is that if you are complaining that you need to lose weight, then fucking do it the right way and change your life, and hopefully you will stay that way. Obesity is a fucking problem. And I'm not talking about what the BMI indicates as obese. (I would bet sicks is considered obese because of his muscle mass.) I am not the woman who will look away from an obese person and snicker or treat them as less than anyone else. I am not that person. What I am is a woman who cares about the health of our families. I will gladly help anyone that asks me for help, as much as I am able. What I will not do, is feel sympathy for anyone who won't ask for help and won't lift a finger to help themselves. I can only do so much. I won't be twisting anyone's arm to save them from themselves.

Ugh. Not responding in the Saddam thread with all the religion talk going on is really making me batty.

I totally agree with you Kah. I should just shut the fuck up. Stop my whining. Stop making resolutions each damn year. And just do it.

This is the last you hear from me regarding my weight problem, smoking problem or any problem that I should just know better and just do it and fix it.
