Debbie Schlussel thinks that the foreign residency of Cho Seung-hui is "yet another reason to stop letting in so many foreign students."

Jake, I don't usually say this about your... observations.... but given the subject matter here, I think that's pretty innappropriate.

Anyway, this article gave me some hope for the future. Seems like the students at V Tech get it, maybe the terror-obssessed politicians should listen:

'Police state' campus policies not needed: students

Quote:
BLACKSBURG, VA. - With classes set to resume next week at Virginia Tech, students say they don't want security measures substantially increased.

Campuses across the United States are reviewing security measures in the wake of the country's deadliest shooting and experts are advising parents to grill universities on what measures they have put in place.

But many students at Virginia Tech say they want their general freedoms protected as well.

"We don't want to go to school in a police state," said Luke Hickey, 22, a civil engineering undergraduate, as he strolled across the campus grounds where the regular student population of 26,000 constitutes a veritable small town.

"We don't want guards on every door."

....

This just makes me think of one of my fears in this country, how we always have this knee jerk reaction to over do things when something like this happens. We have to face the facts here, there was NOOOOO way anyone could have seen something like this coming, and no one should see something like this happening at any college. So I just pray they don't start the scape goat hunt next, where for some reason we have to find some poor person to blame this on, other then the shooter himself.

They don't need a person. It's the gun's fault. Just watch. Rosie O is already screaming for more gun control.

I agree. But yet somehow, the British media is blaming the South Korean masterpiece Oldboy. It always strikes me as odd that when someone goes on a spree like this, society in general has to find a scapegoat. Be it Marilyn Manson or Grand Theft Auto or The Matrix or whatever. Society just cannot except that some people are just deranged psychopaths and has to find fault somewhere else.

Yet.

Society accepts that people like Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, etc are mass murdering fucktards without having to blame a scapegoat. Why is this?

I never claimed to be "appropriate," SPacey.

Look, what happened at Tech is horrible -- and it's pretty close to home. I know people who went to Tech, and we've a ton of Tech grads who work at my office and students who intern here over summer and winter break.

But this is just one nutjob who snapped, and really, blaming anything or anyone other than the shooter for how things turned out is pointless and wrong.

People are pissed at the cops for not locking down the campus sooner -- they thought they knew who the shooter was after the first two murders, and they questioned a suspect. Why didn't they lock down the school? Because they were questioning a suspect, and after it became clear that it wasn't him, they thought the shooter had fled and they didn't have any reason to believe that there would be more killings.

Plus, how do you lockdown an entire university? It is, by nature, an open environment. Buildings have multiple entrances and exits, students come and go, and not everyone is in class at the same time -- and regardless, students are free to skip class, so there's no way to ensure that everyone is where they're "supposed" to be. The school sent out email alerts as soon as they realized there was continued danger. What else could they do? They can't call everyone; Sure sure -- text messages, and stuff, but even then, there's no guarantee that would reach any mor estudents than an email.

Oh, and sure, Virginia has some rather lax gun control laws, but this nutjob would've gotten a gun anyway.

And yes, I know that the teachers, etc. told police about his unstable mental state, but that they couldn't take any action unless he tried to hurt someone. This is nothing new. I remember from when I was younger, hearing stories on the news about a woman who had an abusive ex-husband. She got a restraining order. When he called her and told her that he was coming over, she called the cops. They told her that they could do nothing until he showed up. So...when he showed up, she called back, and by the time the cops got there, she was dead.

It's the dark side of having a free society, and it's one that isn't the norm, but it does happen from time to time, and every time, it really sucks.
