This one is about 15 miles from where I live, and goes for 190K. I'm in love with this one, too, but alas, until we stop being so cheap it's apartment living for us. ~sigh~

Not quite my neighborhood, but this is pretty typical: a 35-year-old house, 4 beds, 2.5 baths, 1774 sq ft., less than 1/2-acre.

Kah, that's lovable? The architecture is interesting outside, but inside, it looks like a Better Homes and Gardens from 1970! Check out this for more hideousness.

And on the inside....

This little beauty only costs $400K in beautiful downtown San Francisco.

The only problem is that you may find a crackhead or two passed out or dead inside when you get home from work.

Upstate NY, pretty much any small town between Rochester and Albany. $200K buys a lot.

Above - 5 bed, 3 baths, 3118 square feet, 2.6 acre lot. Lots of this up here.

This one - 6 beds, 2 bath, 4019 sq ft.

Newer construction - 4 bed, 3 bath 2100 sq ft

The problem up here is taxes. Any of these, the taxes go anywhere from $4000 to $6,000 per year or more.

I don't think your taxes are that out of line. Especially when you look at how much house you're getting to start with. A starter home (which I don't believe exists anymore in SE Wisconsin) runs 180-200K, with taxes between 1000 in some of the smaller towns whose lots have their own well and septic, to 5000 for shitholes on 1/10 of an acre in Milwaukee County. Taxes are based on services. Milwaukee County has an excellent fire department, and Dodge County doesn't rush when it comes to plowing the main streets. Around here, many people base where they live on how much they want to pay in taxes.

Besides, if the state didn't rape you on property taxes, they'd get you somewhere else.

Like toll roads, high sales tax, taxing your bonuses at almost half, high car registration fees. I can go on. But, why?
