Golden Age Flash by Junkyard- Besides my usual problems, WHAT IS MAKING THIS PIECE LOOK SO OFF?? I can't figure it out. Julie Benz As Scarlet Witch by recklessjb- Pretty good. Nice, clear pose, simple costume. It's too bad it's so pixelly. Original Concept: Druid by show_u_who_i_am- Nice style. I take it "Druid" is an X-person? Megatron's Fusion Cannon by DAVID GUIVANT- New scene. Nice. The Human Torch by wolfsfang- Nice flame effect, good perspective. Superman-2 by J.Ayala- Very cool. Well done. Here's a question you should be able to answer- what is that stuff on the sleeves of the kryptonian outfits? The fluffy looking stuff? 2 Kingdome Come Batman by batmanfan123- Pretty good. Your best stuff yet, I think. Teen Titans Vs Trigon by bearbot- Wow. Very nice. Asterix by walta- Everybody's favorite barbarian; good 3-D render. The Crow: Waking Nightmares Starring Mark Leung by Radogol- Interesting. Pretty good. The New Marvel Girl by Dark Phoenix II- I wish there was more to this one. Some energy signature or something. Mr. Freeze by fanboy1171- Nicely done. The Invisible Woman by batdude- Pretty good. I saw that you gave the costume a little depth around the edges- effective. Supergirl by Nathauan13- Good costuming, clean hair- color change. Got Milk Superman by Superman20- Nice drawing. Good lines. Cyborg Tomb Raider by bondman- Pretty good metalizing. Is there actually a cyborg Tomb Raider out there, by the way? |

Golden Age Flash by Junkyard
Pretty good piece, in all. What's making it look weird? Hmm... the main thing I notice is that the anatomy's rather weird: his torso looks really stretched and his legs seem too thin. There's also some weirdness in the lighting, it's completely different between the head and body. And the distinct (albeit totally in character) goofiness of Browder's expression probably doesn't help, LOL. Um... that's all I can see, really. I actually think is rather less obviously wrong than some of your other pieces, to be honest. Julie Benz As Scarlet Witch by recklessjb Art notes would be nice. Pretty good piece, but with some really bad pixellation in spots, particularly the face. Decent costuming, but again very painty. I really think you need to work on putting more gradation into your costumes. Original Concept: Druid by show_u_who_i_am Pretty good drawing, but why not try to add this costume to the manip you did earlier of the character? The Human Torch by wolfsfang Pretty good piece. The fire effect's rather nice, if a bit smudgy. It might be a bit better if his face wasn't obscured by the flames. Superman-2 by J.Ayala Cool costume design, and well manipped. Once again, some art notes would be nice. 2 Kingdome Come Batman by batmanfan123 Art Notes please. Pretty good piece, quite nicely Frankensteined. The armour's nicely done. The anatomy's totally whacked though, the head's too big, the arms and legs too small, the eyes are kinda bulbous (and the screen left one in particular has a weird shape). Teen Titans Vs Trigon by bearbot Good job, Alex! I'm always impressed by people who can still crank out high-quality scenes with ye olde Frankensteining method. That somehow seems harder than Posering them would be (he says, never having tried either... not that I think Posering's easy, it's just that it simplifies the creation of poses you couldn't do otherwise). Very nice piece. Really good Frankensteining, as usual, Starfire looks really good in that regard (though Superboy seem sort stretched to my eyes). Robin looks really good (old pic, sure, but he still looks really good), as does Trigon himself. Great skin tone there. Wonder Girl's pose doesn't entirely work for me; it's 99% perfect (like you said, good pose for flying) but the position of her right arm is oddly unnatural (I guess the model had hold of some reins?). Another thing... Cyborg's costume doesn't look all that metallic, more plasticky. Anyway... I think I'm overnitpicking. This really is a great piece. Kudos! Asterix by walta Welcome to the DCG! Never seen an Asterix piece here before. Quite nicely done, cool skin tones. The wings on the helmet look rather blobby. The Crow: Waking Nightmares Starring Mark Leung by Radogol Once again, not bad at all. The lips on the headshot seem a bit blocky, and the Frankensteining on the main piece is off, the head's too low down and the skintones don't match. Good piece overall though. The New Marvel Girl by Dark Phoenix II Pretty well done, but I agree with Junky that it seems a bit too minimalistic. A power effect would be nice, or... just something. Mr. Freeze by fanboy1171 Welcome to the DCG! Superb debut, and my favourite pic of the day. This is done from scratch in Photoshop? Whoa. Cool pic, really nicely coloured. There's some nice cartoony metal work in the costume. The head and helmet are really well done, amazing job on those. Great lighting on the head. Nice background as well, I like the polar bears -- nice touch. The Invisible Woman by batdude Pretty good piece. Nice colours. The edges are mostly rather nice, though maybe a touch overdone in spots, ie the belt. The main weakness of this piece is in the costuming -- the lack of shadows and highlights, as well as of wrinkles, seams, etc. It looks rather flat cause of the lack of shading, the hands, for example, look really bled out. Supergirl by Nathauan13 That's certainly a nice costume design. Good piece, with pretty good costuming and a really cool background. Good work with the recolours. The costuming's weird in a few spots... the skirt seems sorta blurry, and the sleeves look... wrong. I think it's because of the way you did the wrinkles. Wrinkles are basically peaks and valleys in clothing, remember. That means, first, that there're areas that are both lighter and darker than the rest of the clothing... you've just add some lighter streaks, which looks odd. Second, those peaks and valleys should show in the edges. They're too straight, they should fold out a bit where you've put the wrinkles. Got Milk Superman by Superman20 Art Notes please. Good piece, as usual. Alex Ross again, yes? You might want to try to develop your own style... I mean, my own hand-drawn art sucks, but at least it is my own... Cyborg Tomb Raider by bondman Welcome to the DCG! Good debut, but art notes would be nice. Nice curve effect, but (a) you missed a few spots around the edges and (b) applying the effect to the clothing as well as to her body looks weird, because the pattern produced is totally different... she's apparently welling chrome shorts and T-shirt over her cyborg body. I'd have either left the clothes as they were, or blended them into the body and recoloured before applying the curve so they don't look so out of place. That's me, though. Like I said, this is a good debut overall. [This message has been edited by B (edited 04-16-2004).] |

UIR Participation has always had an unfortunate tendency to fluctuate. And people who do them regularly need to take breaks every once in a while, to boot. At least I do.

Ok,but what happened to the people who usually do them? (Essex,Dpearceful, Welshcat, etc) I don't like to give criticism myself. Otherwise, I would do one.

Welshcat and Essex don't do them that often, at least not right now... maybe once every month or two. Dan's on a temporary UIR hiatus.
It's your choice whether you do one, obviously, but if you have time then please go ahead! Everyone's opinion is useful, not just those of the tired old UIR hacks like myself. Besides, giving criticism is useful for your own work as well, if you find certain problems in what other people have done, then you'll be more likely to watch out for similar things in your own work. |

I don't like to give criticism myself. Otherwise, I would do one.

well I love telling people they suck so here goes nothing ; ) - Golden Age Flash by Junkyard hmmmm I like this series, if you can call two pics a series, so far. I like the sweater and the gloves, the helmet's a classic. where the pants meet the sweater doesn't look right. Also just to pick a nit, the face is a lot sharper (or maybe just darker) then the rest of the picture. - Julie Benz as Scarlet Witch by recklessjb ack some real bad compression here. I think without it this pic would look infinitly better. maybe kicking up the text a bit would be nice. I'd have made it bigger added a colored drop shadow and had her overlap it. - ORIGINAL CONCEPT: DRUID by show_u_who_i_am ok lay off the lense flare, totally doesn't work on a hand drawn picture like this. not a bad costume design from what I can see, but I'd recommend a different pose next time. if I were to try and draw a picture of druid I couldn't do it off what little I can see from a side view. - The Human Torch by wolfsfang great concept. the window frame is a bit small, I think it'd look better if it framed the entire picture instead of just the left and right sides. human torch gets a bit lost in the great looking fire. - Superman-2 by J.Ayala hmmm same picture as before ; ( I like the asymetrical look of the costume. the metal on the arms (I'm guessing metal) could stand to be a bit brighter/shinier - 2 kingdome come batman by batmanfan123 that is freaky... - Teen Titans vs Trigon by bearbot neat picture, wish I know who trigon was. only problem here is that trigon's angle is a bit messed up, he looks like his limboing his way down the street, not standing up straight. good work on all the titans. - Asterix by walta not sure who or what this is, notes please. - The Crow by Radogol interesting paint style, I like it and I think it could be real cool looking once you fix up some of the details. the face doesn't quite look right, it's a bit darker then the rest of his skin. also the gun is a tad weak. - The New Marvel Girl by Dark Phoenix II it's a bit to simple, but still looks nice. I like it a lot. one thing that bothers me is the dot between her lips, looks like a piercing or something. I think a piercing would be excellent, just not there. maybe one of those below the lip above the chin deals. - MR. FREEZE by fanboy1171 great work, good pose and a nice layout. adding the polar bears and the ice really adds to the pose. nice job with his helmet. - The Invisible Woman by batdude well I like that it's heather kozar, she's purdy. the colors are to flat, there's got to be some tutorial out there to help add some depth to your manips. - Supergirl by Nathauan13 nice to see the wrinkles added to the costume, good improvement compared to your earlier supergirl manips. - Got Milk Superman by Superman20 to clean, so few lines there's not enough depth tot he picture. very nice work on the nose and mouth. - Cyborg tomb raider by bondman cool effects, is that an added blur to cover up her boobs? if it is cool, if it's not it's the biggest flaw of the picture. |

No, I think he was meant to look like he was about to fall over, from the Titan's onslaught. Trygon, by the way is just an incredibly powerful demon, and father to Raven, one of the Titans. |

I don't like to give criticism myself. Otherwise, I would do one.

it's not criticism....it's helpful advice to artists. i never think of what i have to say as criticism....i never really try to criticize (too much) on what one artist has done, of course others might argue that point. how an artist takes the advice is up to them, they can take it personal (as some do) and be very defensive....or they can take the message with an open mind and look at the suggestions that were made and see where we are coming from. the reason i haven't been uir'ing lately is due to a multitude of factors. A back injury that limits my pc time, after X amount of time UIR'ing i get bitchy, also i have been thinking of a new way to spice up the uirs. anyway....with that said bkpark, i would recommend UIR'ing to every artist. not only to keep the UIR's alive, but you will find it helps you as an artist....you start picking up on the little things other artists miss, you also see what people are trying or not trying and you can incorporate that into one of your pieces, etc. dan |

I had to comment Asterix by walta.
It’s the first time in DCG history (as far as I know) this character shows his face. Nice 3D work. I hope you keep working on his universe and bring us his friends. I have just one problem with the image: it is too dark. We know Asterix comics has not such dark mood. For those who don't know this french comic book, visit http://www.asterix.com/ |
