Four New TV Spots for SPEED

By: Jarrod Sarafin

TV spots 6,7,8 and 9 have popped up online for Speed Racer courtesy of Warner Bros. The upcoming adaptation of the 60's anime stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Hiroyuki Sanada, Richard Roundtree, Ji Hoon Jung, Benno Furmann, Kick Gurry, Paulie Litt and Roger Allam. Directors Larry and Andy Wachowski led the project, based on a screenplay they wrote.

Plot Summary: Born to race cars, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed’s thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won’t drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother’s life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Speed Racer will hit theaters May 9, 2008.

I was sold on the first trailer and now that I have seen the 4 minute trailer I am more than sold...I wonder if they plan on putting this out in 3-D in the future because it looks as though it would look awesome in that format...

I truly dislike the over-the-top, cartoonish look that they've chosen to give the visuals for this movie. It makes the movie look campy--like one big joke. While the movie still hasn't come out, i can't help but feel that there's a very real possibility this movie may bomb. Why couldn't they take speed racer as serious drama instead of as camp? My guess is to make it a "family" movie, but there's no rule out there that says all family movies must be comedies.

On a different note altogether--what the heck is up with this new layout for the website?! I wasn't even able to read half the article because it was covered up by the panels for the AVP movie on dvd and the related content sidebar. The worst thing is neither had a little x in the corner so i could make them disappear if they interfered with the reading!!

I don't think anyone would have been able to take this movie seriously if they had played it straight. To make this movie serious, they would have had to change so much about it that they would have had to change the credits to "inspired by the TV show." I think they made the right move. It looks awesome!

I'm with you fft. This looks great. Over-the-top cartoonish look?!?!? It's adapting SPEED RACER people. This looks to be good campy fun I can take my niece & nephews to. Looking forward to it. I haven't even bothered to look at these latest ads. I've seen enough to know I'm there.

Yep...Blue Tiger, I think this movie is going to bomb and finally put the Wachowski Brothers out of our collective misery!!! These guys have only made two good movies...Bound and The Matrix. The two Matrix sequels were horrible and now it appears that Speed Racer is even worse!!! Even a woman took the time to send a comment to the letter's section of this week's Entertainment Weekly that she and her son both looked at each other after seeing a preview for Speed Racer and said: "I think I'm going to have seizure." I think that's a bad sign.-Sabrina Vick Those are her exact comments, as I said, they are in the new edition of EW, a magazine owned by Warner Brothers, the same company that produced Speed Racer BTW. I suspect that after its first weekend of release, which will attract the curious for first views of the picture...this film will collapse in its second weekend, and be listed as Dead On Arrival at the box office!!! Can you say tax write-off??? Why would studio continue to entrust large sums of money to two brothers...one accused of being heavily involved in drug use, if we are to believe media reports, S&M, and a rumored sex change...in addition to other erratic and strange behavior???!!! And they, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers, wouldn't give Joss Whedon Wonder Woman??? Makes no sense!!!

Metal...What does not make sense is your comment...Why in the hell would we care what some woman and her son think about this movie? I'm willing to bet that you could not come close to making something on par with the Wachowski's worst movie and willing to take that bet farther that this movie makes a killing...Another thing, what's with the personal attacks on the Wachowski's? So what if some of those rumors are true, I think I could find a few skeletons in your closet and the thing that makes sense most of all is that Joss Whedon does not make Wonder Woman period, one of the lamest and weakest of comic book characters of all time, the only saving grace is her outfit and that cleavage and possibly that superman/invisible man/wonder woman joke implemented into the screen play...

Hey metal. There’s a letter in Vanity Fair from a guy who says all letter writers to Entertainment Weekly, and people who read those letters, are retards whose opinions shouldn’t be trusted. No lie. His name is Amanda Hugginkiss. Call over to Vanity Fair and ask about him.*pretend this is a paragraph break* Not sure what the Wachowski’s drug & drag use have to do with making a film, poorly or not. Is it because no one with any sort of artistic talent has ever used drugs and/or alcohol or been into kinky shit, and been able to produce anything worth anyone’s time? Is that it? Huh? Or is that just personal, pointless opinion? Why would studios give these two money? Is it because studios hate to make that money back? Is it because all there films have made crap for bank? Or is that because they like kinky sex and think the Wachowski’s will let them watch? Okay that last part might be true to an extent. Guess it figures on who Okayed the money. *I’m a paragraph break* Anyway – I gotta get back to reading the letters page of The Weekly World News in case Bat Man (not that one, the former Bat Boy that has to be an adult by now) writes in to critique the next Chronicles Of Narnia movie before anything about it is announced.
