Fox is off to WAR

20th Century Fox, New Regency and Davis Entertainment will produce the family action comedy LITTLE BIG WAR.

Though few details are being released the story centers on a family that must band together to fight action figures that come to life and go on the attack. It's being described as in the vein of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM.

It's based on an original idea by Greg Suess. Jay Longino and Michael Browning wrote the script.  Greg Suess and Bernie Cahill will executive produce. John Davis will produce.  Walt Becker (WILD HOGS) is attached to direct.

And if this plot sounds familiar it should.  In 1998, Universal Pictures released SMALL SOLIDERS by director Joe Dante.  That film centered on a teenager, the son of a toy store owner, who tries out some new action figures: The Commando Elite vs. The Gorgonites. What the teen does not know, is that both sets of toys were designed to move, talk and play back. The Commando Elite's purpose is to destroy the Gorgonites. Unfortunately, the toy designer who was responsible for the programming, bought highly intelligent military computer chips that are usually used for steering missiles - and are able to learn. Now, the Commando Elite, led by Major Chip Hazard, is up to destroying the Gorgonites, led by peaceful Archer, who hide in Alan's parents' house. Now, a battle, in which the destructive ability of creative computer chips against creative computer chips with a different attitude comes to light, is about to begin.

now wait a minute, yes it sounds like Small Soldiers, but till we hear more I say give it the benefit of the doubt, a movie this early on doesnt need the stygma of having its idea connected to another film if it actually isnt similar.

at least its not a remake or a re-imagining. it just doesnt sound particularly original.

till then i'm taking a wait and see... i wont bash it i'll just say its not particularly original.

Based on an original idea...from 1998. Seriously this could almost qualify for a lawsuit since the story is a little too similar to Small Soldiers (Family must defend themselves against toys that come to life). I can't see this as being good, considering they are basically saying its Night at the Mueseum except with toys. So really in a sense its ripping off TWO movies. Where is this "original idea" Mr. Gregg Suess? Maybe this is like the Clonus Horror/The Island incident, Suess woke up in the middle of the night and saw Small Soldier on the TV and thought he had a dream and came up with an "original idea". If you don't know what the Clones Horror/The Island incident is, its basically where Michael Bay and company ripped off an old 70s/80s film Part: The Clonus Horror and made The Island, practically copying scene for scene and claimed it was an original idea. Thanks in part to Mystery Science Theater 3000 for airing Parts, the makers of Parts sued and won a seven figure settlement.

Didn`t like Small Soldiers, so its doubtful, I'll like this. I also didn`t like NATM. I couldn't even sit through it.

Me too, I really liked Small Soldiers. I was perplexed as to how badly it was received. I thought it was a real good family/action film. Hopefully this one'll at least have an original plot aside from the obvious rip-off.
