The Weinstein Company has signed Cory Edwards to write and direct the big screen live-action musical version of FRAGGLE ROCK.

As with the TV series, the film will be populated by a mix of human characters and Fraggle Rock puppets.  The story revolves around Gogo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red outside of their home in Fraggle Rock, where they interact with humans, which they think are aliens.

Ahmet Zappa and Brian Inerfeld will executive produce.

The show premiered on HBO in 1983 and ran for five seasons. It has been broadcast in more than 80 countries.

Cory Edwards co-wrote and directed 2005's HOODWINKED.  He is also the writer of HOODWINKED 2: HOOD VS. EVIL and ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH.

I've heard for 3 years that Fraggle Rock was gonna be returning but I didn't think it was be made into a movie. Well guess its a 50-50 move that may or may not pay dividends at the box office since today's youngsters aren't familiar with the show which is basically a take of The Muppets. Now if only Dark Crystal 2 can get out of developmental hell.

I'm still waiting for Dark Crystal 2, as well. That movie creeped me out as a kid, but I was also always totally intrigued with it.

Fraggle Rock played about 1/20 the part in my youth that The Muppets did, but I'd still be interested to see how a movie would do this far removed from their heyday. The chipmunks proved that material from the 80's can translate into plenty of box office success... but can you say the same thing about live action puppets from the 80s?

Maybe they could have it so the Muppets and the Fraggles' together, that would be cool.

I watched Dark Crystal with my own kids a couple weeks ago, and it is still relevant (considering we are in the CGI era). I even have the production books with the original drawings. Simplicity at its most complex.

Fraggle Rock is another classic. Lets bring them along a contemporary Muppets movie.

Mahna mahna...

Love the show. By todays standards they or someone out there will probably try to be politically correct and say "Hey their miners doing slave labor" Where's the union when you need them? Hahahaha. Nothing like licking crystals while your building something. Its funny but I've noticed with my younger family members that Sesame Street, for instance doesnt really have as much an impact on them than it did on me as a kid. It a shame. I was totally into Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Mr. Rogers, etc. The 80's had some great shows, Good times, good times.

Now that I have an 18 month old son I'm seeing all these old shows I used to watch as a kid and he's still transfixed by them. My wife and I just introduced him to Sesame Street and he can't stop saying Elmo and Cookie. Every time I hop on the computer he wants me to put on sesame street videos. It's funny this story is on here today though because just yesterday I flipped on BBC kids and watched Fraggle Rock for the first time in probably 20 years. And it was about Marjorie the trash heap being moved. I forgot that those big monster guys used to scare me. I'll have to take my son to see this whenever it comes out. Anyone remember Pinwheel and Today's Special? I don't think they show those on tv anymore.
