Frakes taking flight with THUNDERBIRDS

Weeks before the classic "supermarionation" THUNDERBIRDS hits American screens again on TechTV, Jonathan Frakes has signed to direct a big screen, live action version of the 1960s British science fiction show.
While the THUNDERBIRDS might not ring any bells, if you've ever come across a show in some late-night channel surfing that had what seemed to be puppets riding in rocket ships and driving cars of the future, this is that.
The "supermarionation" referred to the show's campy, sometimes hyper-real, sometimes Howdy Doody in space practice of using puppets and models. The show centered on Jeff Tracy and his sons as they rescued people around the world, and the help they got from British secret agent Lady Penelopye.
The movie has been in development for years as an adult-poised action film, but has been changed to a family adventure which Frakes (STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, ROSWELL) is set to direct in early 2003.
