The director sat down with Ryan Rotten after holding his press conference for I AM LEGEND at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. In the interview, Lawrence discussed his thoughts after watching the first two adaptations of Richard Matheson's novel, the 50's THE LAST MAN ON EARTH and 71's THE OMEGA MAN, as well as other topics about the production and his future project plans.

Here's a sample:

Shock: We've heard that you tried to portray the infected through practical means. Did you find something comfortable in doing them CGI?
Lawrence:
We had a change. Originally, I might have wanted to do them digitally, but it was a very expensive ordeal so we decided to do everything live. We hired all of these actors, dancers and stunt people, put them through a boot camp, shaved all of their heads and put them through the makeup process. But what we found after literally one day of shooting is that real people couldn't have the abandon we needed. There was going to have to be some digital augmentation anyway because there were attributes we needed to see - their jaws distending, hyperventilating because their metabolism is all jacked up. These are things people can't do. We said, We just have to do these digitally. You get this different feeling from our creations because of their extended jaws and rapid breathing, their skin is sorta transparent. You get these subtle differences that I really liked.

Shock: And there's a conscious decision to make them more animalistic, more primal than what they were in the book. This goes back to what you were saying about making Neville the focus, but did you and Akiva consider making the infected more human?
Lawrence:
We have about an hour of footage that's not in the movie, there are other things we have with the creatures. But the cleanest, clearest, most emotional through line we have in the movie is Will's character. That's the path we chose.

If you've seen Omega Man with C.Heston just wait for the Directors Cut of this new version with Smith to come out about March of 2008.Why go see a movie that has been edited, etc, and pay $10 to $12 a ticket?
My 2 cents worth....

"Why go see a movie that has been edited, etc, and pay $10 to $12 a ticket?"

Answer: The Big Screen Experience.
There is something about "going" to a movie and being swallowed by the immensity of its presentation that even the biggest of HDTVs can't provide.

Every movie you will ever see in the theatres or anywhere else is a so-called "edited" film. Editing is a part of the film making process. If they did not edit the movie, I would probably not go see it then...

If movies were not edited we'd be looking at 3 to 5 hour films every time out. Nothing beats catching this type of movie on the big screen. And I for one I'm glad that they keep the footage edited out and add it back to the special dvd releases. For people that really enjoyed the movie or want to see exactly what the director's intentions were at first. I just wish they would do this with the original dvd release and not with the 7th, special, director's cut, unrated, with deleted scenes and never before seen footage version.

A-frickin'-Men WISEGUY! Not that it will EVER change cuz there's a sucker born every minute but it would be sweet if H-Wood would respect it's audience and just give us the theatrical & director's cut in a flick's 1st and only necessary DVD release. I just cracked myself up. Hollywood respecting it’s audience. Man I kill me. Damn shame.
Be that as it may, this movie does look like it’s gonna kick my ass and I can’t wait to see it in the theatre!!!

Yeah Im definitely gonna see this. I totally felt the isolation he was going through, very creepy. I actually felt for his safety. All in all a very impressionable trailer.

I'm excited about this movie. This is going to be a very eerie adaptation. Will Smith is good, the setting is good. I'm game!
