Legendary fantasy and comic book artist Frank Frazetta died on Monday after suffering a stroke. He was 82 years old. Frazetta began working in comics in the 1940s, eventually coming to renowned comic publisher EC Comics in the early 1950s. He worked on newspaper strips such as Li’l Abner and Flash Gordon and his own strip Johnny Comet.

Frazetta became a superstar when he painted the covers for Conan paperback books of the 1960s, virtually defining the look of Robert E. Howard’s pulp swords and sorcery hero. He also did covers for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan and John Carter of Mars novels. Later, Frazetta became associated with Warren Publications providing many memorable covers for magazines such as Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella. Several of Frazetta’s paintings were used for album covers such “Death Dealer” and “Dark Kingdom” for two 1970s albums by MollyHatchet.

So talented was Frazetta that when he suffered a stroke in 2001 that debilitated his right side, he taught himself to draw and paint with his left hand. Frazetta opened a small museum on his estate in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania to display his works. While Frazetta had long refused to sell any of his Conan paintings, in 2009 he sold his painting of "Conan the Conqueror" to a private collector for $1 million dollars.

Frazetta earned numerous awards in his lifetime including the Hugo Award and Spectrum Grand Master Award. He was a member of the Will Eisner and Jack Kirby Halls of Fame. He is survived by his four children.

He was my favorite artist growing up. I still remember my art teacher saying that it wasn't art. But then again, my teacher thought drawing cowboys and indians, and horses was art. I still have all of Frazettas art books and probly will keep them til the day I die. I have yet too go too his museum. I hope it will be open for many years too come.

My condolences too his family, he was the greatest.

What a legend! I never tire of looking at Frank's amazing work and his amazing portrayal of women... He painted the picture of what I wanted my wife to look like!

Thank you Frank and may the good Lord rest your soul!

Rheul_home,

You might want to call ahead to avoid disappointment:

The multimillion-dollar art collection of Frank Frazetta, at the heart of a family feud that led to a son's arrest, has been removed from its Marshalls Creek museum — and it's not coming back.

"They're not going to be displayed back here in the Poconos after this," Bill Frazetta said.
