Director Frank Miller has chosen the lead for his next comic adaptation, THE SPIRIT. He insisted on auditions for the leading role and actor Gabriel Macht has won the part. The movie will be based off Will Eisner's comic series of the same name and it's set for a October 2009 release. Macht recently wrapped up WHITEOUT starring opposite Kate Beckinsale.

Plot Summary: The story centers on a man who has faked his own death so he can battle crime from the shadows of Central City. He runs up against the Octopus, a villain who's bent on wiping out the entire city and kills anyone unlucky enough to see his face.

I much as I like the character and premise, I cannot see this working right and being a big hit. Hope the budget is modest enough that it can continue on though. It would be a nice change of pace from all the comic books being made into movies now. Can't wait until Raimi gets his Shadow finally up and filming… I just want some Noir-esque settings in some of these comic movies.

That fool kind of looks like Spirit in the face. He may need to get in the gym though. Also, Miller better be real careful how/if he casts someone for Ebony White.

I agree spader, but what the hell they've made everything else.

With Miller directing, this might end up being a bit more stylish than previous pulp adaptations (Dick Tracy, The Phantom). Still, it might be better off as a SciFi miniseries, rather than a feature film.

lincolnparadox, Dick Tracy wasn't stylish? I think that WAS the problem, it was all style and no substance. As far as the Spirit...bring it on. I'm really looking forward to this film. I've been a big fan of Eisner since I first started reading comics. I know Miller is a HUGE fan and I even liked his take on the character over recent years. I hope he has a great crew backing him up. The casting seems good for the lead. Not familair with the guys work, but he has the chin (although, when it comes to chins...no one can beat Bruce Campbell. When is he going to get a shot at playing a superhero?)

CappyMorgan-- Dick Tracy was filmed in a comic books style, but so were a bunch of movies that came before it: Superman, Supergirl, Flash Gordon, Popeye, Sheena, Annie. Dick Tracy did a lot of neat stuff with colors and editing, but stylistically it was a "comic book movie." Miller will make a "Frank Miller movie." Just like Batman was a "Tim Burton movie." I'm not saying that Warren Beatty did a crappy job. I'm just saying that he transferred the comic book to the screen. It was a faithful, clever adaptation, but not exceptionally stylistic.

Miller and Rodriguez need to do a Sin City 2 already...Then again, it is probably good that they are not rushing it like all other sequals nowadays, and doing other projects first...I still can not wait untill they start to film that.
