The the opening of 'The Spirit' just around the corner, Frank Miller is lining up his next project, with looks like it'll be 'Buck Rogers' according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Miller will re-team with Odd Lot Entertainment, producers on 'The Spirit', Gigi Pritzker and Deborah Del Prete who are negotiating to option the rights from Nu Image/Millennium. Nu Image obtained the rights to 'Buck' earlier this year. Immediately after that announcement rumors broke that Miller would direct the film. Seems those rumors were right on the money.

'Buck Rogers' was created in the pages of the "Amazing Stories" pulp magazine in 1928 and quickly became a hit comic strip the next year. It told the story of a contemporary man who enters a state of suspended animation and awakens in the 25th century. It's been the subject of numerous movie serials, radio shows, TV shows, cartoons and video games since then.

Miller is also likely to write the script for the film. The story is still in the early stages but The Reporter says to expect "a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption."

There's been much talk of 'Sin City 2' moving forward soon and Miller will likely be involved with that before he gets into the new project full time.

What do you think? Is Frank Miller the right man to update BUCK ROGERS? Who would you cast as the hero? What about Lt. Wilma Deering? Post your comments below...

They should probably wait to see how bad the Spirit sucks before giving him more Directing gigs. From what I've seen from clips the action is clunky, and slow. I like Frank Millers work, and without him comics would likely still be the land of "Holy Gosh Gee, Batman" BUT I'm not sold on The Spirit. AND in later years Miller has gotten a little more....Miller. I like All Star Batman and Robin, but it's pushin the limits of me liking it.

Miller should write it, but someone else should direct it.

I like the idea of Frank Miller writing, but I'm not too sure about the possibility of a "darker take" on the character or story. Buck Rogers should be a grand or epic adventure. I would like to see Stephen Norrington take the helm and give it the same look and flair as The Mummy.

Wonder if the studio will go with the original 1928 comic strip origin, Buck falls into suspended animation after getting trapped in a mine, or the updated Gil Gerard version, Buck falls into suspended animation during a freak cosmic storm while navigating his shuttle, Ranger 3, through deep space. I prefer the latter.

BTW, Farscape was a great "retelling-esqe" of Buck Rogers. Just swich out frozxen for a lot of years, and switch to transported to another side of the universe, or another universe completely, anyway my point being they could take a cue from that.

Are we gonna get some "bidi-bidi-bidi"?

Sweet! After he's fucked up the Spirit, he can lay low ole' Buck!

Two movies I shan't be seeing.

This doesn't thrill me since William "Buck" Rogers was one of my childhood favorites. The collected comic strips in a book, not the later TV series. It had little to do  with how the actual story was. From what I see of the Spirt movie it has little to do with the original strip either and I don't know how his directing is. But I suppose I should give him the benefit of the doubt.

I liked this better when it was called "Futurama".

OR...

I liked this better when it was called "Idiocracy".

'Buck Rogers' was created as a comic strip in 1928.

Not quite.

The character (along with WIlma Deering and Dr. Huer) was created by Philip Francis Nowlan, and first appeared in a couple of novellas published in the sci-fi pulp Amazing Stories in 1928. The following year the characters were adapted into a comic strip.
