There were rumors a few months back on a Freddy vs. Jason 2 on the horizon but apparently, that has been placed on hold. A fly-on-the-wall over at New Line has informed Bloody Disgusting that NL executives are now thinking about bringing Freddy back for a new "Nightmare" film. We already know that the JvF writers are working on the Friday the 13th film which hits theaters Friday Feb 13, 2009. Now, it looks like they want to get the seperate Freddy franchise rolling again.

According to the site, they're still in the "ideas" phase of the project so they don't know which direction they want to go.

i wonder how old Robert Englund is now. Gotta be pushin mid 50's by now.

He's still plenty young enough to play my favorite movie villian. Besides, it's not like it REQUIRES him to be young for the roll!

I love freddy! I just hope they don't try to "chuckie" it up with dark comedy or a killer girlfriend. They should keep it simple and go back to his roots.

plasticfruit, unfortunately Freddy has been heavy in dark comedy ever since part 3, and Jason vs. Freddy was loaded with it, most unintentional. You are right though, if they want to get back on the good foot, they should go back to the first fim and take a lokk at what made Freddy scary.

Apparently Robert Englund is 60...I agree that he's not too old to play the role simply because of all the make up that goes into making the character, but my question is WHY? The only two good Nightmares IMO were the first and the third ones. All the others were pretty freaking goofy. At least with "Freddy vs. Jason" I was expecting and kind of hoping for goofy. I just wish New Line had gone ahead with "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash"...that would have ROCKED. They could so easily tie it in too, as long as they follow the original "S-Mart" ending of "Army of Darkness"...Freddy and Jason are able to keep coming back because Ash STILL didn't say the correct words when he put the book back.

Why not? There are still some legs left in that old bird. I hope he makes a mention about Jason.

Remake the first one like they are doing with all the other old horror franchises and keep the role like in the original where he didn't talk much and was just one scary psycho.

Dark comedy? I wouldn't consider anything Freddy has done dark comedy… one liners is more like it. I agree with Hanso, less talk and more scary. Though I doubt a rehash is in order.
They just need to make sure they get a real director to do this, none of these hacks that have been out there lately.

I love this series, but scary it just is not. No, not even the first one. Sure, Freddy scared the shit out of me when I was 9, but now he's just great to make fun of when you and your pals are staging your own version of MST3K.

The acting and dialouge are laughable. Take Johnny Depp's line from the original that "we have reason to believe there may be something screwy going on here!" or Langenkamp's startling revelation in Nightmare 3 that "It's a door!" Anybody who's expecting anything more is just setting themselves up for disappointment.
