I can't say Im surprised with this news.
As for Nightmare, no matter who they get to play Freddy, they can never fill the shoes of Robert Englund. Speaking of Englund, the production should at least give him a cameo in the film.

New Line and Platinum Dunes are moving forward on a new Friday the 13th that will be a follow-up to the film which hit theaters recently. The Hollywood Reporter says that the previous efforts screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift are beginning flesh out a script for the next project in the franchise.
Unlike the sophomore efforts of other franchises, the new “Friday” is expected to be not a sequel so much as a follow-up, those familiar with the project say. Jason Voorhees will be the villain, of course, but the new picture is expected to use elements of the original franchise more as a jumping-off point than as a template.
The reboot drew from the first four pictures in the “Friday” series, and producers are said not to be keen on the plot elements of the half-dozen movies that followed. And Marcus Nispel, who directed the latest film, is a possible but unlikely candidate to helm the “Friday” follow-up; the director is believed to be fielding offers for movies across other genres.
The latest Friday the 13th has already out performed all previous solo killing sprees from Jason Voorhees by grabbing $56.5 million domestically. They've also earned another $15.3 million in foreign markets, which brings their worldwide gross to $71.9 million. Produced on a budget of only $19 million, the studio needs $26 million to beat out Freddy vs. Jason to be the #1 of the Voorhees films.
Insiders caution that there is no green light and Platinum Dunes and New Line are actively working together on another franchise reboot, A Nightmare on Elm Street, which is set to start shooting in two months.

Just like nobody could ever fill the shoes of Nicholson as the joker? Hmmmmmm NEVER say NEVER.
They'll get a good person as Freddy, just like Heath came in and made the Joker his bitch!
Ya, what Hanso said and on top of that........Brown the Eye!
There has been no casting announcements as of yet. There's been rumors for quite sometime about Billy Bob Thorton playing a role but that was debunked a while back. There were also rumors that Robert Englund would have a cameo not too long ago...
But that's what we have thus far. Rumors. No official press releases out of New Line or Platinum.
If production is indeed set to roll in two months, expect some cast members to be officially signed soon.
Good thing it's a follow-up and not a sequel.
WTF!!?? Last time I checked, the very definition of a sequel is to "follow-up" a movie based on at least one of the original characters. Is Hollywood really this stupid? Still haven't made it out to see this new Friday the 13th, but I want to. Never could understand why they insisted on calling it a reboot or reimagining. From what I've gathered from the trailers and reviews, they could have just called it a sequel.
I haven't seen this movie but am going tonight so hopefully i get to see some good killing
You'll see some good killing Pred. They stuck to a very simple formula and pulled it off nicely.
boobs - blood -boobs - blood - boobs - blood.
Wash and repeat.
After a few drinks (I'm beginning to see an ugly pattern here), I am wondering if I can get Slipknot loud enough on my surround sound to make my ears bleed ;) woohoo !
....and yes, a sequel was a no-brainer.
"follow-up" is the new sequel... because making official sequels isnt cool in hollywood, they have to make a follow-up instead.
what they failed to say is that it took in $42 million and nabbed the #1 spot the opening weekend... weekend #2 it dropped to #53 and took in $7 million... usually a movie drops off by 50% each week... if this slide continues, it will be out of theaters and on DVD by March 15st
Who did they cast as Freddy? Get Crispin Glover on it.
