It's about time we got some clarification on the upcoming FRIDAY THE 13TH film from New Line and Platinum Dunes. For those not following the latest on this film, I'll update things up until now. A few years ago, New Line hired some screenwriters to pen the remake of the original Friday film. The scribes turned in a script but New Line threw it out because there was no full size Jason Voorhees, no hockey mask & no machete. As most of you know, the first Friday, starring Kevin Bacon, centered on Jason's mother as the villain.
At this point, New Line decided that course of action wasn't the way to go and brought on Freddy vs. Jason scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift to pen a new Friday film with the characteristics I mentioned above (Jason, mask, etc). After this announcement, the trades and various news sources were still calling it a "remake" which had a lot of us scratching our heads. Are they remaking the original film, changing the origins or something else?
Well, Ryan Rotten has had a source close to the project chime in and shed some light on the situation. This isn't a remake. I can't even call this a sequel since we know what happens to Jason after JASON X. If anything, it's going to be a side story involving Jason Voorhees and Camp Crystal Lake sometime in between previous installments of the franchise. This is what the source had to say on it over at Shock Til You Drop.
"It's not a remake," says our insider. Don't even expect an origin tale - as some production listings around Hollywood are pegging it as. Imagine if there was a story to be told somewhere between parts two and four, just add water (from Camp Crystal Lake, duh), insert a leaner, meaner, faster Jason Voorhees, set to "blend" and you've got the recipe for what Dunes, writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift and director Marcus Nispel got cookin'.
FRIDAY THE 13TH will hit theaters Friday, Feb. 13, 2008.
