FRIDAY THE 13TH 'Not' A Remake

It's about time we got some clarification on the upcoming FRIDAY THE 13TH film from New Line and Platinum Dunes. For those not following the latest on this film, I'll update things up until now. A few years ago, New Line hired some screenwriters to pen the remake of the original Friday film. The scribes turned in a script but New Line threw it out because there was no full size Jason Voorhees, no hockey mask & no machete. As most of you know, the first Friday, starring Kevin Bacon, centered on Jason's mother as the villain.

At this point, New Line decided that course of action wasn't the way to go and brought on Freddy vs. Jason scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift to pen a new Friday film with the characteristics I mentioned above (Jason, mask, etc). After this announcement, the trades and various news sources were still calling it a "remake" which had a lot of us scratching our heads. Are they remaking the original film, changing the origins or something else?

Well, Ryan Rotten has had a source close to the project chime in and shed some light on the situation. This isn't a remake. I can't even call this a sequel since we know what happens to Jason after JASON X. If anything, it's going to be a side story involving Jason Voorhees and Camp Crystal Lake sometime in between previous installments of the franchise. This is what the source had to say on it over at Shock Til You Drop.

"It's not a remake," says our insider. Don't even expect an origin tale - as some production listings around Hollywood are pegging it as. Imagine if there was a story to be told somewhere between parts two and four, just add water (from Camp Crystal Lake, duh), insert a leaner, meaner, faster Jason Voorhees, set to "blend" and you've got the recipe for what Dunes, writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift and director Marcus Nispel got cookin'.

FRIDAY THE 13TH will hit theaters Friday, Feb. 13, 2008.

Anything would be better than Jason X. I laughed so hard when he re-entered Earth's Atmosphere. Priceless.

see I knew a prequel would be a better choice than a remake...at least thats what it sounds like they're trying to do

BAH! This is bad idea! What they should do is make Jason vs Freddy vs Pinhead vs Mike Myers vs Leatherface vs Howard the duck!

You know Michael Bay is behind this? On his myspace he says it's his low budget co making this.

Does it really make a difference whether it is a remake or a sequel? It would be the same no matter what. Jason kills teens except for a couple that manage to escape. The end. They're not reinventing the wheel here. I actually liked Jason X if only because it had the always watchable Lexa Doig in it. She is so hot, I would watch her read the phone book.

I was actually looking forward to a retelling of Jason's story. This just another chapter, which is kind of boring to me I guess. Hopefully it'll look cool and have some inventive kills, but I'm not all that excited about this.

This still seems very confusing from what I

read. It sounds like one of the stories Wild

storm comics. If the movie is good, I might

see it. Otherwise it looks like a waste time

in theaters. I am not sure how this would

work after seeing all of the movies, since

it supposed to be like a side story.

insert a leaner, meaner, faster Jason Voorhees? Speed was never Jason's MO I dont understand what the big deal is, they've NEVER had really good continuity in this series and I would imagine that any story that came after Jason X would just be set on earth again in our current time period with no real explanation as to how or why. Just tell us what year this thing is set in at the very beginning and I'll be happy.
I would however, like to know how they eventually captured and froze Jason and got him into the state that he is in at the beginning of Jason X... I guess it doesnt really matter though does it?

JASON VS FREDDY VS ASH comes in at comic shops today--#1 was incredible as was the Friday the 13th comics.

Jarrod you have the dat wrong, I think? It hits theaters in 2009 not in 3 months ( even though that would be a great birthday present.)

So will Corey Feldmans character from #4 Final Chapter appear? I wish they would release #3 again and in 3-D as it was originally released.

Oh if anyone likes PHANTASM-go to the OHANTASM V site cause a script exists but they are waiting for a greenlight from the studio so there is a petition to sign so fans get to get things going (hopefully).
