FRINGE: The Same Old Story

Olivia's Past Comes Back to Haunt Her This Week in a Way She Never Could Have Predicted

By Stephen Lackey     September 18, 2008

Olivia (Anna Torv, L) reviews experimental data on a victim who seems to have aged at an alarming rate in the FRINGE episode "The Same Old Story" airing Tuesday, Sept. 16 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Also pictured L-R: John Noble, Jasika Nicole and Joshu

Fringe is definitely one of those shows that is going to slowly evolve into a better series similar to Heroes and The Sarah Connor Chronicles. This week’s episode is a good and a bit tighter than the premiere – even considering how scattered the plot threads of the episode are. Tonally, the show is still trying to find its footing or at least strike a balance of humor and drama. The only real humor comes from the nutcase doctor. Everyone else is fairly morose making some of the doctor’s comments and action stand radically out of place. This isn’t a series that needs to be more humorous though. The conspiracy core of the series also kicks even more into high gear this week revealing the show for what it is, not what Abrams said it would be.

J.J. Abrams said prior to the launch of Fringe that it wouldn’t be as serialized as LOST and that it would be more of a weekly drama that fans can come and go from. Well, he was partly honest with his fans. The show isn’t “as” serialized as LOST but it’s hard to believe that as the series gets further along that it’ll be no problem to stay with the series after missing an episode. It won’t be nearly impossible like it is with LOST but it will require some good recaps on the part of Abram’s team each week. The conspiracy deepened this week with more reveals tied to the group that Dunham is working for, the epic story arc that was previously revealed, and now in the closing moments, another twist is revealed. There are many pieces of the puzzle to follow in this series and it’s only going to get more convoluted so the idea that this is a mystery of the week kind of show is misleading.

The actors on this series are all good and they had better dialogue to deliver this week. It wasn’t classic literature, but it was snicker inducing like the premiere was. This week’s story was intriguing and it really felt like a story cut from the X-Files cloth and in this case that’s not a bad thing. It’s interesting how the story tied to a case that Dunham had previously worked on, making the pat come into play and making her place in it even more intriguing. It could be that Broyles know more about Olivia than he’s even revealed to his cohorts because they question his choice in her to handle the investigation. Hopefully, Broyles knows more about Peter Bishop or maybe Abrams does because if his only reason for being around is to handle his father he’s going to get uninteresting really quickly. Sure, he’s a brilliant guy and his mind will come in handy, but his involvement in the team really needs to become more important. Without going into spoiler country, there is a scene in this episode that hints at his involvement in the overall conspiracy but that’s a separate situation to his part on the team in week to week cases.

Overall, the show is a big improvement to the premiere with many of the characters getting even more intriguing and the conspiracy starting to get addictive. There are definitely ideas in this weeks episode that have been covered in other series but the twist is nice and the connection to Olivia’s past makes it all feel fresh. If the writers settle on the tonal balance of the show and give Olivia and Peter more back-story, this show could become one of the must see shows of the fall.

I have to agree with you on that. This show has the potential for being a great show, if it doesnt get to freaky. I just hope that it doesnt go the x-files route. Just one thing about this show that I hate, is those damn signs that show where they are. It is just annoying.

I definitely agree that this is a show that evolves because as I thought the pilot was okay, this episode was a whole lot better. Dialogue in the first episode seemed a little erratic and forced but this episode was very fluid. I am interested to know what is going on with Peter Bishop and the secret his father knows about him that he hinted to Dunham about at the end. Does anyone else think that the woman who plays the head of Massive Dynamics could play Shirley Manson`s role in TSCC better than she can? Those signs are pretty cool. They don`t take away from the show at all. They got that from Fincher in Panic Room. Maybe I am crazy but did the show end with flash image of an half of an apple?

The only thing I liked was the end in which the son sings his father to sleep. Surprisingly sweet. <br /> Otherwise, it's typical Abrams nonsense. Lots of flash and conspiracy without any dramatic realism. I seriously doubt it will match the X-Files' dramatic realism of CSM's complicated but very human role; whatever fans say, the conspiracy made quite a bit of dramatic sense. Abrams' shows are full of ridiculously evil characters who either quickly change or go on being evil. "The Pattern" will just be more childish convoluted nonsense.<br /> Also, the suspense is poorly done. Everything's so overt, I have to turn away to avoid getting grossed out. It's not well done. The censors have just let up a ton. Millennium handled a lot of scary stuff with subtlety and intelligence. The serial killers were human and sympathetic and realistic. This is just nonsense.

There wasn't one disturbing scene in that whole episode. Dunham description of what the serial killer did to his victims hit me way more than anything I saw in those 45 minutes. You sound a little bias and I can only assume that yo are not a fan of what Abrams does.

My husband isn't sure he likes it. The whole science aspect turns him off. He can suspend belief for supernatural plot elements, but it just gets under his skin when they do they do scientific things that simply aren't possible, like using optic nerves to view a person's last moments in life. Weird, because he likes sci fi in general. He doesn't like the creepy Doctor Bishop either. I like it. I have no problem with the fantasized science and I love the creepy doctor. I wonder if Peter was born slightly DD and his daddy, Doc Bishop, used genetic engineering to fix him up.

This episode was way too X-files-ish for me. Wasn't it Tooms that stole pituitaries? On top of that their use of science fiction technology to solve the case was a bit too easy and a "we'll just reconfigure the phasers/shields" lame way out. It's like the "numbers" show in that they have the scientist to help solve everything - and considering the guy was in a mental hospital/jail for the last umpteen years it's amazing that he's caught on to all the updates in technology for those years but yet is amazed by seat warmers...

Ponyboy anybody can play the Shirley Manson role in Sarah Connor better than Shirley can! I tuned out half way through the episode finished watching it the next day. I don't know, something about the episode just didn't do it for me. LittleNell, I can see where your husband is coming from cause when they said they were gonna use the last image imprinted on the eyeball is when I stopped watching. Not fan of the Dr too much either. Oohh a seat warmer. Yea, that amazes him but the guy used Windows Vista on the 1st episode no problem. I like the black dude from Lost, they should have him around more but not to interrupt his Lost obligations.

LOL, IRA that's just what I thought.

This was much improved over the pilot, which wasn't bad at all, but not as impressive. This was creepy and freaky. I hope they're not just going for gross out stuff, though.

Ponyboy76<br /> "Maybe I am crazy but did the show end with flash image of an half of an apple?"<br /> <br /> Yes it did. If you watch at the commercial breaks they also have little graphics. What is really cool is looking deeper at them to discover that the apple seeds at the core are 2 fetuses, the frog has some kind of logo on it's back and the butterfly's wings. Still not sure if it will somehow tie in or is just JJ misdirection. But still I think it's a cool addition to a very promising show.<br /> <br /> Also looking forward to learning whether or not Jackson is a clone too or he engineered his intellect for the pattern.
