The Musketeers First Photo Arrives

New Series from the BBC

It has been hard to ignore the great programming and TV series that the BBC has been producing. Whether it be Doctor Who, Orphan Black, Copper, or Ripper Street when the BBC announces a new series, Mania pays attention. Here is the first photo and press release from their new series The Musketeers

Official Press Release: BBC AMERICA has released the first image of new drama series, The Musketeers, premiering in 2014.  Created by Adrian Hodges,  the series is set on the streets of seventeenth century Paris, where law and order is more an idea than reality.  More than King Louis XIII’s personal bodyguards, Athos, Aramis and Porthos stand resolutely for social justice, for honor, for valor, for love - and for the thrill of it.  Luke Pasqualino (Skins, The Borgias) will star as D’Artagnan alongside Musketeers Tom Burke (Great Expectations, The Hour) as Athos, Santiago Cabrera (Merlin, Heroes) as Aramis and Howard Charles (Royal Shakespeare Company) as Porthos. Together they are a crack-team of highly trained soldiers. The Musketeers is a BBC Drama Production for BBC One, co-produced by BBC America and BBC WorldWide.

This looks and sounds like it going to be a winner. First off it is from the BBC, so it will not be dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. Secondly that is an impressive list of credentials for writers and the like. thirdly, that pic makes me want to watch the show by it-self. Also, I love The Musketeers.

 Ok, i honestly didn't think they could make another 3 musketeers movie, let alone make one that looks worse than that Mila Jovovich one. ....But this one looks worse.

I'm looking forward to this.  Especially that its the BBC behind it.  The British has more keen eye when it comes to tv programming.  Now I haven't seen the last version of Musketeers done by Paul Anderson for obvious reasons that it was Paul Anderson.  But seeing the movie previews before it, I moaned despite it actually had the chance to being remotely decent but I couldn't bring myself to do it.  Then once it was released, it got panned heavily for being obnoxiously silly despite decent casting.  I may give it a shot if it comes across my tv.

So now this series if anything will have me tuned in just because I know the BBC will serve it justice.  Can't wait to see it.

@violator14 4 - It is not a movie. It is going to be a show. And as i said before it is by the BBC, so it will be mature and adult themed. Not some dumb ass crap like WB shows or a Pula Anderson movie.

I had no idea this series was being made but I'm extremely happy its being done by BBC. As Axia said this denotes more of a sense of quality.

I have no problem whatsoever with another rendition of The Three Musketeers. They are Franchise Characters to me. Their story can be re-done or re-imagined as many times as the public will pay for it. A TV series hasn't been done in ages and this might add new vigor to the story that the last few movie version didn't have.

Interesting to see that Porthos is being played by a black actor. I know there were in fact African-French and mixed race individuals running around France at that time. The Musketeers author Alexandre Dumas himself was biracial.

 @monkeyfoot - Great points on the race issue. I too find it completely plausible that he is African-French. It makes sense in a way and makes it more diverse at the same time. Though I did not know Dumas was mixed race.

Now I want to see a trailer. I hope that they bring this to Netflix as they have a ton of BBC programs.

@axia,

Yeah his father was a famous general in the French army serving under Napoleon. He was called the "Black Devil" by Austrian troops he fought against because he was so fierce. I don't think he ended up too well. I think he died in a prison and his family had a tough time after that. But a great writer came out of it.

Thanks monketfoot, that is some awesom history.  I get a very good feeling from this new show.
