Sylar (Zachary Quinto) will have a legit father very soon on NBC's "Heroes", reports Entertainment Weekly. The magazine reports the father will be played by John Glover, someone very familiar to genre fans and someone who knows how to deal with sinister sons since he played Lex Luthor's father on "Smallville". According to reports, he will be showing up near the tail end of the upcoming "Fugitives" story arc.

"When Sylar meets his father, he's going to see a path ahead of him that he doesn't want to take," says a source. "He has a lot more in common with his father than he realized."

While revealing Sylar's new daddy, the magazine's Michael Ausiello also caught up with Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies"), the creative writer credited with season one's success and who will be returning as a consultant. He updates us on what to expect in the next chapter of the NBC series.

Where did Heroes go wrong, in your opinion?
BRYAN FULLER:
It became too dense and fell into certain sci-fi trappings. For instance, in the “Villains” arc, when you talk about formulas and catalysts, it takes the face off the drama. And I think the goal for everybody is to put a face back on the drama. You have to save something with a face; otherwise you don’t understand what you’re caring about. I thought the "Villains" arc started out very interestingly, and then became sort of muddy and dense and I couldn't get my hooks into the characters to understand their motivations. I also started to feel confused about what people's abilities were. One of the great things about the first season is that the metaphor for their abilities was very clear. Those metaphors seem to have gotten complicated in the past two seasons. I share that concern with everybody on the writing staff. It's not like I'm coming in and saying, "This is what you need to do to fix it!" Everybody knows what needs to be fixed and everybody is sort of rowing in that direction.

Your work starts with episode 19, yes?
Yes. I'm fortunate to be coming into a very exciting story line. [Former co-exec producers] Jeph [Loeb] and Jesse [Alexander], before they left the show, set so many great events in motion with the "Fugitives" arc [kicking off Feb. 2]. It really is a fresh start. All of the characters are back in their real lives. You see Peter as a paramedic. Claire is looking for colleges. We get away from the world of formulas and quasi-magic.

Are the "Fugitives" episodes leading up to 19 solid?
Yes. Episodes 14, 15 and 16 are amazing. The whole "Fugitives" arc starts out very strongly, and then it gets a little dense in the middle in terms of the mythology. So I came in right at the point where everybody was realizing, "Oh, we're getting too dense here and we need to put faces on stories because there is no face to a formula; there is no face to saving the world." So it's turning this big ship back into a character stream, and everyone on the writing staff shares that desire. We need to get back into a character place, because that's where this story started: Very clean, superhero metaphors to everyday life. That's the path that we're taking. But it is a big ship so it's going to take a little while to turn it.

Where are the people saying anyone bashing Heroes was just hating on the show for hating's sake and that the show had no problems? Proof is right here there is something wrong with the show & Tim Kring has also gone on record stating similar things as Fuller.

I hope "Fugitives" is as good as they say, although I'm not sure on it since the guys responsible for "Villains" worked on alot of it.  You already saw Fuller say "it gets too dense" code word, for it's gonna suck when they hit the mid point of the volume.  Plus, there was all this hype about "Villains" bringing Heroes back and we've seen how that has worked out.

Glad to see him mention they will be bringing back the characters to real life like they were in Season 1 and that they will be killing some, although I'll buy that when they actually stop bringing the dead back from the grave.   Anyway, like I said, here's hoping Fugitives brings this show back on track.

John Glover is Lex's dad & Sylar's?  Nice!

Man, who will John Glover play next?  Satan's Father?

I like the idea of getting back to the Season 1 idea of trying to live a normal life while dealing with the fact that you are not normal. Sylar's dad is going to be interesting, to say the least, and we know that he's going to be a complete and total bad ass...some of the characters in the recent arc should be disposed of and I have to say that they are doing a very good job of that in the past 4 episodes...I'm actually looking forward to the last episode this week....Febuary should be interesting then. Of course there's always that point in this show where there's a lull, and I kind of expect it....it just shouldn't be all over the place, like it was this year.....

I've enjoyed Heroes mostly,  but it has become too "dense." It is hard for a casual viewer to pick up the show because of too many characters and plotlines, similar to Lost. Which is probably why the ratings have gone down. Hopefully, it will become more streamlined.

I'd hoped that Leonard Nimoy was going to play Sylar's father. It would have been so cool. Redhair, Julian Glover has played Satan himself in a late 90's series called Brimstone.

Julian?

Fuller needs to get this show up and running again so it gives him some clout and maybe he can talk NBC into bringing “Pushing Daisies” into their network. I am going to miss that show… as usual the networks take the good ones off to early and keep crap like “Knight Rider” and so called reality shows on. If anyone other than Whedon can get “Heroes” back on track it's Fuller, sounds like he has a plan.

Glover as Sylar's Dad will definitely be interesting. As far as acting, they couldn't have picked a better actor. Although, I agree with monkey that Nimoy would've been cool. But Glover was a badass as Lionel Luthor. Sinister as hell at all the right times. I wonder if the whole "in common" thing will mean he'll have a power, possibly similar to Sylar's. Very interesting indeed.

Whedon can't even get his own show on track, how can he get Heroes?

thorin02 12/11/2008 4:08:46 PM

***Man, who will John Glover play next? Satan's Father?****

Given that he already played Satan in the, sadly, short lived 'Brimstone' that would would bring thing's full circle for him.

Most complaints seem to fall into four big issues...

1. Too many heroes to follow.

2. The "Hot Potato" nature of powers.

3. Confusing shifts in alliegences.

4. Time travelling.

I hope that's what the "muddy and dense" remark meant. They are working on those.
