Game Shows and Games

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, July 15, 2007

Last week was a really busy week for TV if you’re into pop culture and videogames. I was glued to all of the E3 coverage on G4. The network featured a minimum of three hours a day dedicated to the massive videogame expo. I considered reviewing it but the problem was that it would be like reviewing a newscast. The only thing I could do is recount the numerous videogames that were demoed and announced and that information is covered elsewhere here at Mania. What I will say about the event is that all three of the press conferences seemed underwhelming with Nintendo’s being the least interesting to me. The reason they were all so un-awe-inspiring is that for the last few E3’s it has been all about new hardware. We had Xbox 360 then the next year we got the other two systems. This year all of the hardware is there so it was all about the games. Don’t get me wrong there were some stunning games on display, the event overall lacked energy. The revamped and much more subdued version of E3 minus booth babes and thousands of fans definitely made it easier for journalists to see the games they needed to cover but I missed the frenetic pace of it all.

I also watched all three days of The World Series of Pop Culture on VH1. If you’re an avid Scene it? player (as I and my friends are) you’ll really enjoy this simply designed game show. Most of the participants are characters themselves and it’s funny to hear the host, a man with a classic radio voice, asking questions about songs that involve big butts. Again, not an interesting series to review because after all, it is a game show, but highly recommended from me.

Eureka started off great so I’m looking forward to continuing with the show. Other than that I’m sticking with the World Series of Pop Culture, Hex, and The 4400. I hear many of you guys telling me how great Rescue Me is and I am going to get caught up with that series at some point. I’m also sticking with the never ending train wreck that is On the Lot and John from Cincinnati is still on the radar.

I've reprogrammed my VCR (yes I still use one) to tape only Doctor Who and not the increasingly boring Painkiller Jane. The way they kiled off a main character wasn't very drmatic. I watched the series occasionally on video tape after taping Stargate and Stargate Atlantis. With both those shows off, I don't bother with Painkiller Jane anymore.

Unless Burn Notice is already in reruns the show info listed is last weeks.

Watched my first ep of Burn Notice last week. Good show, gonna follow this one.
Jericho really irked me, though. Watched the series premiere two weeks ago, liked it, and settled down to watch the next episode Friday night. Problem was, they aired episode 13, instead.
Grr.

I caught a couple of Burn Notice eps now. It seems kinda interesting, if they actually intend to wrap up what has happened to him. Fortunately, they can answer the questions and still carry on the show, since secret agents can make for good television. They just have to cultivate an audience that cares about the characters. Plus it has the Chin, so I'm there.

Trust me Captmathman, you didn't miss much in episodes 2 - 12. The second half of the season is where Jericho really takes off. You should still be able to follow everything without having seen the earlier episodes, but for good, detailed recaps check out www.televisionwithoutpity.com.

The John From Cincinnati description is wrong to. It should read something like "Characters say and do things that make no sense. No one cares about supernatural occurrences . Shaunie and Kai's bad acting cause brain tumors."

nax,
Thanks for the advice, but missing an ep makes holes burn through my head. I caught the second ep on the CBS official site, which had a couple of buffering delays.
I think I'll continue to plow through the rest on the 'puter, then watch my DVR'd eps from 13 to the end.
Even if it is 10 hours I'll never get back. Thanks for the warning, though...
